Over on NeuroDojo, @DoctorZen reports the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia won't fund publications in Hindawi, Frontier and #MDPI 🤨http://neurodojo.blogspot.com/2023/08/malaysia-puts-pressure-on-researchers.html Presumably they have reason to consider them #PredatoryPublishers but not stated in the annoucment... and did they mean Frontiers Media SA?
A new journal devoted to non-destructive testing, published by #MDPI, just asked me (twice!) to submit an article. Part of my reply:
"I don't work in your field or any neighboring field. Either you know the topics on which I publish or you don't. If you do, then you wouldn't solicit articles from me. If you don't, then you wouldn't solicit articles from me. Hence I must view your solicitations as #spam sent to researchers at random."
Another part of my reply: This public toot.
Why is MDPI accused of predatory practices?
1. "Inflated" journal impact factors (abnormal self-citations)
2. Unusual growth in special issues. One journal publishes ~10 special issues per day
3. Article processing times that are twice as fast as other journals + known for "lightly" peer-reviewing papers
Universities have begun discounting MDPI pubs on CVs and Clarivate is delisting some journals.

The journal "Intelligence" is probably the most renowned outlet for #intelligence research. It's an #Elsevier journal. Elsevier is a publisher that makes a lot of money from researchers' work. I was happy to see the "Journal of Intelligence" come to life - an open access journal with an editorial board that features smart, respected scholars of the field. The publisher is #MDPI. I recently reviewed a manuscript for "Journal of Intelligence". Short deadlines but it was scientifically sound. 1/2
I share Zen Faulkes' concerns about who exactly https://predatoryreports.org/ is and how they judge #PredatoryPublishers and #PredatoryJournals (most recently #MDPI, certainly now a questionable publisher): https://neurodojo.blogspot.com/2023/03/a-star-chamber-for-predatory-journal.html
P.S. Is Zen on Mastodon yet?

Curious what your thoughts are about #MDPI and #Frontiers? Just read this post here, which is pretty dismissive of both: https://mahansonresearch.weebly.com/blog/a-year-later-what-is-a-predatory-publisher-anyways
Are there still scenarios where it would be okay to publish in these journals or are they already too far gone?
Well done, Hyemin!

Nine publishers just expressed their "full support" for the new White House #OSTP guidelines for federal agency #openaccess policies.

"Our main message is simple: publishing in any journal published by this group already meets or exceeds the requirements outlined in the OSTP memo."
The signatory publishers are #Copernicus Publications, #eLife, #Frontiers, #JMIR Publications, #MDPI, Open Library of Humanities (#OLH), #PeerJ, #PLOS, and #Ubiquity Press.

@ashwinvis Individual MDPI journals may be okay. If you trust their editors you could publish there as if you publish at a credible scientific journal.
MDPI as a publisher, however, does not seem to care about quality whatsoever. So if you do not know the editors, I would be careful. Some incidents are mentioned in an older blog post of mine. http://variable-variability.blogspot.com/2013/10/open-access-journals-meteorology-climatology.html
As a climate scientist, I will do my best to avoid publishing at #MDPI.
