Actually there was a nice #Landsat overpass .

The standard RGB shows no obvious plume coming from the #volcano at the time of the overpass, and nothing obvious in the more general view .

But when looking at the NIR composite, there is a distinctive track of brighter clouds
(#volcanotrack) which is a telltale of clouds contaminated by the volcano.

This coincides with the similar picture taken by the #MODIS
sensor, which has coarser resolution.

Smoke transport from the raging #firesinChile can be seen with the Aerosol Index product available from Tropomi and OMPS sensors.

Because Aerosol Index relies on UV channels, it is sensitive to smoke above clouds a unique detecting feature not available in standard VIS sensors such as #MODIS #Landsat or #Sentinel.

Comparing high AOD in the #CopernicusAtmosphere Monitoring Service forecast (init. 00 UTC and valid for 06 UTC on 18 Jan) with Aqua #MODIS visible imagery from 18 Jan showing the huge extent of the area under the haze.

It seems the Maud Rise Polynya (aka Weddell Sea Polynya) is open again, but still quite small.

A #polynya is an area of open water within the #seaice cover.

The #polynya in the Maud Rise region appears from time to time and is an interesting phenomenom to explain or observe with #satellite data (many papers!).

It seems we are lucky and #MODIS got a view of the polynya between the clouds yesterday.
