An intellectual need for relationships has implications for how functions get treated in school math:

Let's stop organizing around function types.
Instead, center relationships between attributes.
Then introduce different function types to explain different kinds of relationships.

Starter for Y11 tomorrow: a "many ways" problem. Simplifying expressions vs. substitution. Hopefully this gets to the heart of it. Sometimes with algebra, without constantly returning to substitution, it can all feel so abstract.

Suggested by a colleague, I used this task of Don Steward today before teaching gradient (for the first time) to a Year 9 class. We did a lot of "how did you know this side was parallel to this one?", "how did you know those diagonal lines were the same length?", how did you know those lines were perpendicular?". Such a nice chat!

When someone responds to me mentioning math by saying "Ugh, I always hated math in high school.", I don't blame them. But I do blame their teachers. #MathEd #MTBoS

Tried to teach my Year 12s today to draw reciprocal functions, eg 1/(x-4) by considering limits x -> infty, -infty and 4 (from above and below). I did this because this is definitely how I do it. I don't substitute and I don't think about translations and I want them to have these skills. Well. It all went swimmingly until we had to think about the distinction of limits from above and below. So now whenever they draw a recip function it only has positive parts...
