>EXCLUSIVE: Lana Condor (To All The Boys franchise), Andrew Koji (Bullet Train), Ross Butler (Shazam! franchise), Sung Kang (Fast & Furious franchise) and Elodie Yung (The Cleaning Lady) are among those set to star in Worth the Wait, a romantic comedy marking the U.S. directorial debut of award-winning Taiwanese filmmaker Tom Shu-Yu Lin (The Garden of Evening Mists), which has wrapped production in Vancouver and Kuala Lumpur.
Wasn't Singapore enough??? Do you North Americans have to come even further north and further perpetuate Southeast Asians all look vaguely Eastern only?? Can't wait to find Kuala Lumpur introduced with a montage using a mandarin cover of a white man song. #TootSEA #MYToots #Malaysia #CineMastodon

To those who have been regularly using the tags #TootSEA and #MYToots and #MakanApaToday alongside your other tags (thank you!), I can confirm that the kbin mag @magASEAN will include your posts into the microblog *as long as* one of those tags is the first tag on your post. You can also @ the mag (and it has to be the first @ in the post)
Until the backend changes so that the scanning will be just agnostic as other fedi protocols (which is how we can follow hashtags so well), that's the current state of things. But in any case, feel free to add yourself, as long as you have a threadiverse account (such as a Lemmy one) you can post there as well. All fedi accounts of course can follow and comment anyway (just with a little bit more friction). #SoutheastAsia #fediverse

Just want to announce: @cendawanita@kbin.social will be my main posting account for Malaysia and SEA newsy stuff. This is since I'll be posting to m/MagASEAN anyway (you can follow here @magASEAN but just fyi you won't see any posts anyway - kbin doesn't federate that way (yet?). This way I won't clog up my local instance feed imo.
But individual users you can see their activity like normal posts, so I'll be boosting some posts from here (but not all). I'll be posting the usual TootSEA etc stuff on the microblog if it doesn't get fetched as well. But anyone also can if you @ the mag in your first line (I'm oversimplifying)
But I'll probably set up an individual mag/sub for my website as well. I do think the linkage works much much better than the current AP bridge as cross-posting.

Ok so thanks to the #RedditMigration i set up a #kbin account myself - the #fediverse might include the #threadiverse but while following #Lemmy communities (i.e. sub) from my current fedi account will show ALL activity on the community, following a kbin magazine (i.e. sub) from this account shows NO activity on my feed.
I can engage with activity from either protocols from this account however as commenter however.
If you're on either threadiverse protocols, you can follow external subs as federated content and engage fully (up/downvotes; comments; sort) plus the usual fedi behaviour in following other fedi accounts.
Conclusion (if like me, you're reluctant to do duplicate/mirror accounts in general): if you want to also follow link-aggregator fedi platforms and their subs, open an account in any of the L/k instances and follow the local or federated subs from that account.

Okay, updates from my browsing in the meantime:
- there is a #Malaysia magazine https://kbin.social/m/Malaysia/ but unlike Lemmy channel following a kbin magazine does nothing in terms of getting the threads feed from another fedi account
- within the Malaysia magazine, a little bit like an automated -key Antenna feature any fedi posts tagged explicitly as Malaysia shows up in the microblog. But it doesn't seem to pick up everything and kinda slow. I've seen my and my mutuals' posts there https://kbin.social/m/Malaysia/microblog/newest. Was this due to federation throttling due to the overwhelming traffic or is someone manually adding it to the microblog?
- you shd be able to add other fedi posts yourself to a magazine microblog section but how about the threads section?
- possibility to start a TootSEA and MYToots magazine is rising and looks interesting but better done if from the vantage point of having a specific/unique kbin account, correct?
Building on a convo with @geraineon the other day, a perfect recent example of my fellow Muslims' psychological distress that's led many of them to absolute wretched behaviour. (CW for homophobia)

It's pretty text-heavy so l'm going to only describe the alt-text briefly,
and the post(s) below will describe it in full.
Unfortunately both accounts are still mostly on twt but that's quite
typical in my part of the world. Worth a follow regardless

Also spotted via twitter, a couple of cool #Malaysian #indigenous resources (1/2)
First: The Melanau Gateway Project - https://melanaugateway.wordpress.com/
To quote the About section: 'Inou Dengah! I am Aniq, a Melanau boy who got frustrated trying to find a centre for all things Melanau. Hence, the Melanau Gateway was born. This website aims to compile Melanau content that is scattered across.'
Melanau people are one of the major ethnic groups in Sarawak, one of the Borneo territories in Malaysia.

#MakanApaToday is colleague bringing over Uzbek samsas for lunch. You can see the connection with samosas but it's also more like a pasty at this point considering the pastry of choice. #Food (non-vegan) #Malaysia #UzbekFood #MYToots

Random stuff that's a reflection of my upbringing more than anything else: sure, I'm Malay by home cultural upbringing but my general class environment is more anglophonic and sinophonic. But everyday Malay culture is as much influenced by Indian culture and Tamil language too, it's just that I don't actually find myself in everyday interactions that informs me of these influences. Some of it is very obvious to figure out, like how in vernacular Malay it's very normal to say, "ha" for yes, which is something we picked up from Hindi movies. Generationally and regionally, saying "yilek" or "tarak" to say nope is also common.
But tonight's lightbulb moment is realizing all the "phui!" I hear or read in Gila-Gila magazine is also Tamil (for 'lies')! 🤣 I had assumed it's just a non-word verbalization. Pfft! How very Melayu of me.
Back when I was working near Jalan Tun Razak, my boss noted my usual getup, which is baju kurung and sneakers (since I commute by train, into a fairly richie area) and told me, whatever I do, don't walk past the US embassy and certainly not during Friday afternoons.
"Why?" "You fit the profile of the post-Friday prayers public protestors."
Anyway, judging by how young the current batch of jokers look like here, they must be feeling so excited. First Friday in forever to march on the streets! Ethnofascist baby's first protest against the great anti-christ nation! They get to slam Americans and Chinese folks AND Singapore?? Damn, I hope they wore some adult diapers in case it got too exciting.

Not here because critical mass isn't achieved yet but in other parts of Malaysian social internet there were recurring bouts of, "yooooo isn't it weird that we've been scenting jasmines in the evenings for the last week??" Because our cultural transmission prioritizes superstition over basic botany. The heat pushed flowering season early apparently.
Anyway, not *my* dumb ass having the exact same thought last night, only to be reminded that my mum has been picking fresh buds from our garden to put in the potpourri dishes. 🤣🤣🤣

Hopefully I'll remember to watch this when it comes out in August, and mainly because I'm curious about where the budget will be spent. Should I be concerned that the fight sequences looked it it was staged the same way as the MidEast portion of Fenomena? The other curiosity is to watch the jingoism from the other direction, since this purports to tell the #Malaysian pov of the mission in Somalia that became the movie Black Hawk Down: https://youtu.be/et2viNOwRrE
TL;DR tht movie underplayed the rescue effort from the UN Peacekeepers which was then made up of the #Pakistani and Malaysian battalions - the Pakistanis had to retreat but the Malaysians stayed with the US forces to get the downed men out. I never kept up past the initial flurry of official grousing when the movie came out but apparently around 10 years ago much of it was properly declassified or at least talked abt publicly, based on my impression from this vid: https://youtu.be/KacVH0pDgsI

Great repost from an account i usually follow on twt. Image description: four photos of wooden stilt houses of various southeast asian traditions. While they have different looks the common features shared included the body of the house situated high above the ground, big windows, and high peaked roofs. The combined effect maximises cooling and ventilation while ensuring rainwater is quickly dealt away with.
