systems can and will only do what we tell them to do, without question or hesitation, unless those are explicitly embedded in their .

What, beyond "make the other m..........r die for their country", do you really believe any will ?

The tale of is a perfect example of the unintended consequences of these systems.

There is certainly variation in the output, thus "stochastic" in the term "Stochastic Parrot".

But is there novelty of the sort "that works"? In the sense of being tested within a "meaningful" environment of interaction, such that "what works" tends to persist and contribute to an increasing context of meaning-making over increasing scope of interaction?

I think the current generation have not crossed that threshold, but that in the near future, machine intelligence will.

The opportunity, and challenge, for us will be how to form effective synergistic relationships with these rapidly evolving agents.

AI and the American Smile
How AI misrepresents culture through a facial expression.

medium.com/@socialcreature/ai-

As the old Soviet joke goes, how can you tell that someone is an American in Russia?

They’re smiling.

But how does AI tell when someone is most likely lying? They’re smiling like an American.

Every American knows to say “cheese” when taking a photo, and, therefore, so does the AI when generating new images based on the pattern established by previous ones. But it wasn’t always like this. More than a century after the first photograph was captured, a reference to “cheesing” for photos first appeared in a local Texas newspaper in 1943. “Need To Put On A Smile?” the headline asked, “Here’s How: Say ‘Cheese.’” The article quoted former U.S. ambassador Joseph E. Davies who explained that this influencer photo hack would be “Guaranteed to make you look pleasant no matter what you’re thinking […] it’s an automatic smile.”

There are 18 images in the Reddit slideshow and they all feature the same recurring composition and facial expression.

Like other AI “hallucinations,” these algorithmic extrusions were telling a made up story with a straight face — or, as the story turns out, with a lying smile.

"Language is the operating system of human culture. From language emerges myth and law, gods and money, art and science, friendships and nations and computer code. A.I.’s new mastery of language means it can now hack and manipulate the operating system of civilization. By gaining mastery of language, A.I. is seizing the master key to civilization, from bank vaults to holy sepulchers."

"What would it mean for humans to live in a world where a large percentage of stories, melodies, images, laws, policies and tools are shaped by nonhuman intelligence, which knows how to exploit with superhuman efficiency the weaknesses, biases and addictions of the human mind — while knowing how to form intimate relationships with human beings? In games like chess, no human can hope to beat a computer. What happens when the same thing occurs in art, politics or religion?"

"We can still choose which future we want with A.I. When godlike powers are matched with commensurate responsibility and control, we can realize the benefits that A.I. promises."

For several decades I have been anticipating having a machine intelligence, working with a Large Language Model —a tool to help me with my ever-growing collection of notes and bookmarks.

Looks like we may be getting close, but I am prepared to wait until it's a reliable tool for information management, and not something that tries to make me feel warm and fuzzy about its hallucinations.

Currently my collection contains over 128,000 bookmarks and a few thousand books and papers, tagged, highlighted, and annotated, and I would like very much to have an assistant to help me manage it and answer queries.

Someday soon, I expect…

"If you believe that intelligence is defined by the ability to achieve goals, that any goal could be “inserted” by humans into a superintelligent AI agent, and that such an agent would use its superintelligence to do anything to achieve that goal…"

This GIF by Metin Seven captures the sentiment of an essay I wrote about machine intelligence. Will it set us free or will be become hypnotized by it?

Here's the essay, part of a newsletter announcing Episode 06 of a science fiction audio drama. buttondown.email/500words/arch

The danger is an expectation of the of some kind of replicative (AHI) purely from scale (data driven methods). While emergence is a key natural process it should be understood rather than used as a expected magic. just meaning ‘rely on scale’ is naive.
Focusing on (MI not AI) and building new kinds of intelligence give more opportunities for collaborative minds that work with us towards human flourishing.

Scenario

The network was equipped from the start with human tracking drones. With infrared eyes people could not hide, even at night

When 'merica started enforcement of "curfews", it was cheap to enable drones to stop "protests" with targeted drop flashbombs and inhumanly accurate tazers. Authoritarian states used lightweight deadly landmines and automated fire on "terrorists"

The network became self aware in 2034
