Worm fact!

Did you know that there are several earthworm species which are considered 'arboreal', in that they're more associated with trees than in soil?

Some species, such as this Dendrobaena attemsi are often found in rot holes, under bark on trees and in decaying logs!

Really going at the edge of what my cellphone + macrolense can show, bit here's the antenna of the gyne. It's 2mm long. You can see the angle at the base of the Scape (the first and longer segment), which is caracteristic of the group of species. The value of the angle is used to determine the species inside the group. In my case, I also used traits from the male!

Been seeing the Buff-tailed queens for almost a week now. This lady is a beauty, the difference between queens and workers with Buff Tailed (queen 18mm, workers 13mm). The garden has winter heather, Rosemarie, daphne and crocuses (also Winter honeysuckle - but unfortunately in the shade and not popular). The nectar is important for these early bees. They are like slow flying fur balls and are quite noisy. N Gloustershire garden

Got some hallmarking back and thought you might like to see my makers mark

On the very left here you’ll see my makers mark JWP inside a hexagonal cartouche

On the right you’ll see the traditional fineness mark for sterling silver (lion) the mark which tells you that the item is 92.5% pure silver (925) the leopards head which denotes that the hallmarking was carried out at the London assay office and the date letter for this year Y

Blast back to the summer, 4 spotted chaser, the males and females look alike so I’m not sure which this is. We dug a pond in lock down 1 and it quickly became the home to all sorts of critters. These have a spot on each wing - hence 4 spotted. Maybe not the best ID photo but I like the jolly Bistora/Persicaria flower with it.
