as an activist who deals with people who have psychosis, it's saneist. and has no relation to their actual experiences. most of them amount to life threatening fear, some seem to enjoy it and some find it comforting. They can find out more by connecting to the hearing voices network. or viewing this (legally or otherwise) bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m000

Put in a proposal to our disability and equality group at work to organise a small film festival for grassroots disabled, Mad, and ND filmmakers. I just had to send an email explaining why I would absolutely not be removing the word Mad from the proposal when many of the most amazing filmmakers in this area specifically identify as being part of the Mad activist community.

Mad Studies is a flipping academic discipline FFS. There is a whole Routledge book on it in our uni library (I know because I ordered it). Can people please just let us use the words we choose for ourselves.

I think as is mentioned in the article. People have been duped with the biopsychiatric idea of 'broken brains' and easily 'fixable' mental illness. It feeds into the neoliberal idea that people are ill because they are choosing to or they are unhealthy people. The notion of 'fixable' mental illness means that people are less accepting of those who are 'mad in public'. we also get more stigma because of our association with homeless people which societies still heavily stigmatize.

As someone who works with people who are inpatients (some civil and some forensic), I never know how to understand people's understanding of madness. these people are othered already. many have traumatic childhoods and horror stories further paint them as murders. In fact, few are. Most are living horrible lives, locked up for years or decades with no one visiting them.

perhaps you are not aware of the Peer Movement? I trained in 2017 to become a Peer Specialist here [ communityaccess.org/our-work/e ]
I use my lived-experience to support other people as part of and outside of the psychiatry system. People in Amsterdam came to the US and created a local model of this school. [ howietheharp.nl/ ]

As a mental health professional, this is in my wheelhouse. I discovered Vikram Patel, Sangath, and Friendship Benches around the same time as I was training for my Peer Specialist career. In 2017, I had a option to intern with the NYC Thrive 'friendship benches' but other people in my class got it. The US is part of the great colonizers for Western Bio-medical psychiatry. The world doesn't need more colonization. I think the community MH model is correct for many reasons. The article mentions the Community MH act on 1963 and sort of leaves out the fact that it never got funding for the community mental health part. This issue is the same today. No one wants to invest in MH. Or they only want to invest in the neoliberal part of they think of as cost-effective. And the carceral part. And that is racist. No one talks about how the current paradigms is racist or eugenicist. And not even effective. The whole focus in the article on psychiatry is a mistake but that's to be expected because of the West's influence. Or at least they should call it biopsyciatry because before pills, it was more about phenomenology. What they really meant to say is that they want to 'fix' people's 'brain diseases' by getting highly paid people to give them pills. It would benefit the global supply chain of Big Pharma. But they neglect to say how fracking expensive that would be. And that not even the West is going to shell out for that, let alone foisting it on the global south who is dirt poor. What is called 'Mental health" is more than brains. People deal with distress because of environmental factors (ACE, systems of oppression, lack of affordable housing, food, medical care). That is 'mental health care'. Or consider Johan Hari's "Anti-depressent Cow" story-- a poor man had life difficulties and became depressed and stopped farming. Someone gave him a cow to continue farming and he was no longer depressed.
