"At that point, we realized it’s not only a problem of not knowing what better social media looks like, but also how to run a successful open source software project. That’s when we found Pieter Hintjens and the Collective Code Construction Contract (C4) that he developed with the ZeroMQ community. The core idea is that community is primary, not technology. Only a strong community can develop and maintain software for the long-term..."

I found this very cool dark gray stone while hiking in the woods along the bay near my house.
It has a face which reminds me of Totoro. 🍊🍃
Do you think it is cool and looks like Totoro?

Phew, as much as it is a treasure chest, it is also a huge unkempt backlog. I tried to find these topics, but couldn't easily dig them up.
Question also is.. when compiling a new list of quirks.. where to record them best?
Maybe as issues in the FEP repo with a 'problem' label. @weex uses the C4 method with #MagicStone and that starts with listing Problems in issues..
Si quieres colaborar con el fork Ecko, #MagicStone está buscando #voluntarios.

Join Magic Stone. It's a good community. You should contribute. Visit the website. Say hi in the Matrix. Discuss problems. Write code and get it merged. It's very simple and we can have some fun making accurate software.

A new version of Ecko has just been released on YunoHost. Version 2022.01.31~ynh1 adds two new themes for accessibility, HTML and Markdown in toots and fixes a bug in polls.
Big thanks to @jorge and @blindscribe for their feedback and support for Ecko!
⚙️ A security fix for Mastodon which will likely affect Ecko is scheduled to be released tomorrow so look out for another update to our YunoHost app then.
Ecko is Magic Stone's community-driven fork of Mastodon. You can install it via YunoHost at https://install-app.yunohost.org/?app=ecko, via docker-compose or from source at our repo linked below.
Please post any bug reports or feature requests in the form of a problem statement at https://github.com/magicstone-dev/ecko/issues

Ecko now has themes that help improve accessibility in a very simple way. If a toot has media with no caption, it gets a red border as shown/described in the attached images.
These new themes are now live on https://c4.social. Admins of the adventurous sort can add to their Mastodon instance with the changes shown in https://github.com/magicstone-dev/ecko/pull/392/files
Thanks to @blindscribe for raising the issue and providing the CSS tweaks!

If you'd like to try running your own instance of Ecko, our community-driven Mastodon fork, or Acropolis, same for diaspora*, YunoHost is the easiest way.
You can install YunoHost on an old laptop, raspberry pi, virtual machine, or remote server and learn what it's like to self-host these apps or one of many others (CryptPad is another favorite as Google Docs replacement).
Have you already tried? I'd love to hear about your experience getting any of the above setup. What didn't make sense? What took a long time? How can we help make it smoother and easier to provide what your community needs?

Codeberg is a non-profit run code repository. I like it as an alternative to GitHub for new projects that may be come core to a fledgling community.
Magic Stone now has an org there at https://codeberg.org/org/magicstone should we want to do a greenfield project.

Maintainers SHOULD close user issues that are left open without action for an uncomfortable period of time. (2.4.19)
Buried in the Collective Code Construction Contract is the clause above. I'm not sure what an uncomfortable period of time is, but early on it's probably not long, like a month or two.
Early on we tried to populate the issue trackers with what we thought were valid problems, but today we have something better. Problems being raised by our community of user-admins!
It's truly awesome to see this feedback loop in action. We've already got some good problems to solve, like being able to handle Markdown and LaTeX and working better with Debian packaging.

Ever play a game where you take a wrong turn 🐉 and it's been a long time since a checkpoint so you have to go back and play a lot to get another crack at it? 🤦♂️
Software development doesn't have to be like that. At all.
We can make branches and forks for free and switch from one to another for almost nothing. We can revert changes and roll back services and pretend that never happened... and sometimes we're make progress. Like exponential progress.
Most people just want to use a thing and move on, but if you're curious and like to tinker, don't let project ownership get in the way.
#Copyleft = universal access 🔓 unlimited lives 👩 and checkpoints. 💾
The only question is, where do you want to play?

Super excited to announce, we just merged a Plugin system for #Ecko which is a first for any fork of Mastodon!
The first plugin is a Stripe integration which was proposed in previous discussions for plugins for Mastodon. If you'd like to take a look at the PR, here it is: https://github.com/magicstone-dev/ecko/pull/290
