Recently, Hynek Burda, a well-known figure in European and my "academic grandfather", turned 70. @SabineBegall and Radim Šumbera put together a fantastic Festschrift, celebrating his work and mentorship. All articles are - have a look:

Aha, there we go! Not a rat!

Nearly perfect overlap on the flip side, and exactly to scale.

This is the jaw of a small sciurid (1 premolar, 3 molars, rear missing). Douglas squirrel & fox squirrel are too large; it is about the right size for Neotamias townsendii (Townsend's chipmunk) or northern flying squirrel (Glaucomys sabrinus). Flying squirrel I think! Chipmunk jaw very similar but coronoid process longer, angle of jaw narrower, incisors more steeply angled.

Two species found in the so far. Larger jaw (25 mm) w 3 basic molars is I think Rattus, smaller jaw (19 mm) with accompanying skull has several complex looping molars and looks like some kind of microtine vole. Have molar pattern comparison figure from Mammals of Minnesota, but vole species are different here in Willamette Valley so that won't really do it! Any Oregon experts who would like to weigh in?

YAY! On this afternoon's walk I found three owl pellets under a pine tree! Definitely some rodent bones in there. Will try to tease them out later. Anybody good at mammal skull identification? Or tips for a good key to Pacific Northwest species?

Today is Monday, so it’s (why not?), and here’s a skeleton of the European hamster (Cricetus cricetus) with cheek pouches. 🐹

It is kept in the collection of the Department of Vertebrate Zoology, Saint Petersburg State University.
