Mildly embarrased to say I nearly missed seeing this Golden-armed Mantis (Hierodula venosa) while walking at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve, Singapore, on 4 June 2023. I saw another insect first and only saw the mantis when I changed shooting angles, and then I saw it.

A group of Asian Ant Mantis (Odontomantis planiceps) nymphs spotted at Bukit Gombak Park, Singapore, on 20 May 2023. They have just emerged from the ootheca (egg mass) seen in the images.

These are common mantises. When young (nymphs state), the mantises resemble ants for protection from predators.

@mgerique The resilience of insects to injury is remarkable. Of course, there's quite the bias in that we only get to document non-fatal injuries. For example this mantis that lost one of its hind limbs. Yet from its behaviour I wouldn't have been able to tell, at least not immediately.

Had a lovely encounter with this 'Boxer' (Flower) Mantis, probably genus Astyliasula, at Dairy Farm Nature Park, Singapore, on 2 May 2021. It wasn't intimidated by us taking photos of it. Instead, it flew on to us and started climbing over us, while 'boxing' its arms. :-)
