Although it tempers the thrust of his work with Screaming Trees, Lanegan’s second solo disc never forsakes the spirit of rock as it pursues a drunken love affair with folk. “Borracho” deconstructs grunge while “Riding the Nightingale” is a hypnotic séance conjuring the ghost of Jim Morrison. “House a Home,” “Carnival” and “Pendulum” are odes to despair on this deeply emotional album.
