#OnThisDay, 24 June 1916, Mary Pickford becomes the first Hollywood star to sign a million dollar contract.
Pickford was a queen of PR as well as the screen. Standard studio contracts were for a year. She signed for two years as both an actor and a producer, bumping the figure over the $1m barrier and getting all the headlines.
