advice for #newUsers on #mastadon : choose a server that has shitloads of users and has been around a while - the others will just disappear

@slcw I couldn't agree more. I don't advise using the new meta app either.

I'd like to see some competition on the Internet.

This past Sunday I had a chance to promote #Mastadon on the air.

One should do so to help get people on board with the #fediverse...especially when your follow story about the upcoming name change for #twitter.

Decided to delete Threads. Too much garbage content I didn’t care about. Part of what I love with Mastodon is I pretty much only see Niners and Giants stuff instead of weird ass ads for mushroom coffee. #Mastadon #threads

I really find the ability to edit alt text so helpful. If you forget to add it to your images, just go back in and add it! #mastadon

@dankennedy_nu I did sign up for #Threads, but only for posting the same #weather related work items that I do here. #Mastadon has become my primary social media outlet. Once I can connect to the people/organizations that are on Threads through here, I'm done with this Meta experiment.

Just took a look at #Threads. It’s full of blue checks bragging about their followers and posting “let’s talk about [inane thing]” to get attention. No way to just see people I follow. No thanks. I like it better on #Mastadon

The time has come to help people realize that they need to be more #diligent and #thoughtful when finding their information sources.

Personally, I will pick #local first, #profession second, then #interests and #hobbies third.

#Mastadon gives me all this, and has helped me reexamine how I use the Internet in my everyday life.

The question I ask is simple: will this #website or #app or #socialmedia source help me be my best person?

What I'm getting at here is that thanks to the #internet, the choices toward what to consume from the #news/media/information industry is more in the hands of each #individual.

Thanks to #socialmedia, most of that control can be influenced by #algorithms, #advertisers, and outside individuals that can paint a landscape that isn't what one needs to follow.

However, thanks to the #fediverse like #Mastadon, control is back in one's own hands...

@WXFanatic I agree that #format is a good reason to join #Mastadon. I think there are a few others.

One is finding a #server that focuses on your region of the #world you forecast/research/etc. Your information would be a benefit for those part of your local feed

Also, IMO, there is more #high #quality weather, climate, and earth science information here compared to other sites.

It does take #effort to find these sources, but once you do the Mastodon experience improves greatly.

I explained #mastadon to a work colleague who said “so it’s like #twitter for dorks?”. Which I don’t really have a problem with, other than, who uses the word “dorks”?
