I've had zero issues so far. It undoubtedly depends on what you use it for, what your needs are.

I'm going to reveal a lot of ignorance in asking this question, but is the media originating from local users (e.g. avatars, backgrounds, own posted photos) from accounts on the local instance stored somewhere different with #Mastodon than the media pulled in from followed and federated posts?

Mastodon is run by Admins who do it out of the goodness of their heart, and while their services are free, this isn't free. It costs them money.

If you are able, contribute to the admin that hosts your instance.

Also, consider them this season. They've had to deal with the Twitter Mass Exodus ... and that means they've been working hard to keep things going.

Welcome the newbies. Thank the admins. Be patient as capacity is added.

1 idea + 1 question re #QT (quoted tweets/toots)

1) I wonder if #QTs if implemented in #Mastodon could be made less toxic if there were designed as "commented retoots", i.e. the quoted toot *on top* with the quotee more prominent then the quoter – or visually at least equal.

2) Many #mastoadmins have rules about CWs, Alts etc. already. How would you phrase an instance rule with the goal to keep QTs pleasant? We want "constructive" QTing, right, but how to put that into an enforceable rule?

Wondering if this could be useful for #MastoAdmins to share the load of media files across instances... 🤔

Hi. Please don't report posts to us that users have made on other social networks. You don't report tweets to Facebook moderators, because it would be ineffective and inappropriate.

Likewise, it's inappropriate to send us someone's messages to you from a completely different social media provider, however awful those messages might be. And particularly when we have no way of verifying if the person you're reporting is really a member of this instance.

If someone has written something offensive on Discord, for example, kindly report it to the Discord server mods.

With the hype around Mastodon died down a little, #tootcommunity is running on just 12 vCPU and 24GB of RAM for just about 26k people. This can obviously scale up automatically if needed - no intervention needed from us.

Proposed resolution:

When Tumblr joins the fediverse by implementing ActivityPub, we should:
- Defederate Tumblr if they inject ads into the federation for our users, and
- Defederate Tumblr if they place federated posts (our posts) alongside ads.

No ads on fedi.

New #MastoAdmins are running on adrenaline, and I suspect they'll start getting tired very soon. We'll possibly begin seeing new and fastly grown instances announcing their early retirement soon, and I hope we'll grow despite the pain and level up our commitment. Still, I worry that not all will and that the #fediverse will have to endure short-term pain to be better off long-term. 4/5
