@simocosimo Try the mobile web view for v4. You get prompted to add it to the home screen and it acts like an app. I haven't used the app since we updated our #MastoInstance

So ? for #SysAdmins of a smaller #MastoInstance How are you getting visibility to help shoulder part of the influx? With joinmastodon gatekeeping the bulk of it towards a few dozen larger instances, what have you done to get seen? I know 'new' instances are a risk and some may want to be hidden in the trees. But how are you building a user base to reach a critical mass where the growth becomes organic? I know instances.social is there. But what other methods are you all using? #Mastodon

As a #MastoAdmin of a smaller instance, its been interesting to watch the federated feed. You can tell when influxes hit the big instances. The local feed gets much... Sparser. The timestamps on the toots end up all over the place. #MastoInstance #Mastodon

@atomicpoet So many instances practically invisible while the top tier are getting crushed. Sure, a newer #MastoInstance is a risk. But why not direct join traffic to a database where instances can agree to meet certain criteria and describe their infrastructure and get listed/promoted to better spread the load in the #Fediverse Even if you have to note the risks of younger instances.

@gossithedog @mitka One issue I've found is it seems hard for people to find new instances to spread the load. Sure there are 1500+ instances but the only ones shouldering the influx are the 65ish on joinmastodon Totally understand the desire to only highlight established instances and not have newbies stranded, but maybe find a way for new instances to certify some level of scale/confidence and get some exposure to help handle the influx. #MastoInstance #MastoAdmin

@GoTakeAKnapp Well, I'm having fun regardless. Brings me back to the days many many years ago when a friend and I hosted twelve virtual servers hosting 150ish domains for email, web, DNS, and so much else... Over a 1mbps symmetric DSL connection. Just as the 'WWW' was becoming a thing.

Just split up our https://msps.io #MastoInstance Sidekiq queues into separate processes to better handle any load. Tweaked some PostgreSQL settings to better match it. Seems to have worked alright and the memory hit was minimal. Went with a set of 5 scheduler/mailer, ingress (gotta read up on that new one), then default-pull-push, pull-default-push, push-pull-default. #SysAdmins #MastoAdmin

Minor thing (that may be obvious to everyone else but me 😜), if you upgrade ruby while upgrading your #MastoInstance - you want to restart mastodon-web, not reload.
