If I am writing a post and I add in someone’s Mastodon like:

@ someone @ somewhere

Would they get something like a ping that they were mentioned in a post?

Like if I had a photo of a really weird bug, I could post publicly and inform someone I know?

Just wondering:
1. How this works technically
2. How this works -wise (common sense would be not to abuse or spam this unless you want to get muted or blocked)

When I reply to a post, I always try to remember to unlist it so I'm not clogging up other's feeds with no-context posts. But more and more I'm beginning to see other people not doing that. What's the etiquette here, am I being overcautious with something no one cares about? What's your opinion on the matter?

@PinkNews do you add or image descriptions to your posts?

I couldn't find it and I prefer not to boost without that.

Good God, is there some way to filter out people who get around the 500 character limit by posting a dozen posts in a row?
I think the etiquette should be: you post the first post as public, to let people know if it's existence, and continuations should all be unlisted, so as not to clutter the timeline of people who are not interested.
And then maybe a setting for auto muting those people who spew forth a dozen public posts because they are too long-winded.

Question about CW and fediverse etiquette. Should I CW politics? (For me politics is an intrinsic part of human experience.) Personally I love to bump into the unexpected, and scrolling past long strings of CW headers is a bit discouraging to me. That's why I set CWs to automatically open. But I don't want to cause any thoughtless distress to others!

A Mastadon etiquette question: when I reply to a post with a hashtag that is relevant to my post, do I replicate the relevant hashtag(s) or leave people to find my post by asking to see replies?

I've Pinned a few posts and it doesn't seem to work on Mastodon the way it does on the other place; rather than new pins replacing the old, they pile up. That gives me a disincentive to do this in case it makes it harder for people to see my latest non pinned posts. One alternative could be not pinning, but Boosting some of my own posts. This seems to be possible, but is it frowned upon? Are there etiquette rules against that? What do others think?

I wish people would use the hashtag more.

That way I can keep it muted.

I really like how there's a red exclamation point on pictures when you don't provide a text description. It's a perfect nudge.

Hey folks, please use to repost something. Leave the third-party clients "quote post" thing for when you want to add something to the original message

@reidrac Do you have any advice about tagging in the conversation beneath the post? I usually just hit the comment balloon, type my comment, and hit publish. But then someone told me I should remove all hashtags from the comments. Not sure if that is correct. Thoughts?

:-)

I agree with everything @arjache@toot.cafe wrote here, and add that another reason to aim for always including alt-text in social media picture-posts is so that other people will grok whatever thing you're referencing. How can your followers understand your brilliant meme if they're not familiar with the source material?

Seen people discussing whether it's "cringe" to boost your own posts, and aside from the argument that, without an algorithm or text-search, it's a good way to re-up something you want to say after you get an influx of followers, the other thing is - since coming over to the Fediverse, the thing I've enjoyed the most is no longer worry about whether people think I'm cringe or not

@atomicpoet "Don't even try to force people to see something they don't want to see" Isn't even *just* good or —it's basic human decency.

(Unless you have a *very* good reason to push something past someone else's established boundaries, which in most cases, you don't.)

While I always try to caption general images, I have not been in the habit of doing so for generative and other abstract art works. I do not know what I can say that will be helpful other than “abstract generative art work”. What do other people recommend? Especially on genart.social and similar communities?

The second question I have about relates to whether it is considered a bad idea to Boost what someone says in a chat between two or more members. This has never bothered me before but some may want their words said away from the hubbub to be kept between those involved in the conversation. I'll only Boost it if I think the person has made a good point and others may want to hear what they say and maybe Boost it in turn. What do others think? Until I get feedback I'll refrain.

@josh A (or I guess) question I've seen a couple times in this thread but still don't see an answer to:

Is there any appreciable difference between CamelCase and droopingCamelCase? That is, does it matter if the first letter of the *first* word of the hashtag is capitalized?

@oatenbeard Don't worry, nobody else does either. ;)

More seriously, check out fedi.tips and the tag.
