#Mastodon now has over #12Million user accounts.

#MastodonGrowth has been enormous over these past months since the #TwitterExodus began.

For context, #Twitter has over a billion accounts, and #BS (BlueSky) has less than 100 thousand.

Mastodon’s big difference is that unlike the other #socialmedia platforms, it is community owned, and not controlled by #oligarchs.

Looks like #Mastodon will surpass 12 MILLION accounts over the next few hours.

For context, #twitter apparently has MORE than one BILLION accounts, and #bluesky has FEWER than one hundred THOUSAND accounts.

These are not active user numbers but give a decent picture of relative platform size.

One huge difference is that unlike Twitter and Bluesky, Mastodon is not owned by #oligarchs.

Pretty much everything I valued at #Twitter has moved to some extent to #Mastodon. So why do I still visit?

I've come to realize that the main factor is simply scale. The content quality on the pachyderm 🐘 is an order of magnitude better, but also pretty thin when looking at any sufficiently narrow subject.

And, in the other direction, your audience reach is more engaged, but much smaller. (That's actually a feature, not a bug, for me.)

I do NOT feel in touch with the world when on the #Fediverse, compared to the #birdsite 🐦 . News eventually arrives, but hardly instant.

So a long way to get to asking:

Are most of the shortcomings of #distributed #socialmedia just about scale? Can we grow into a more satisfying experience.

Or perhaps, there by dragons?

I am quite happy with the 600 I follow. Also, I am NOT complaining about the new people that have come after me or those that might come in the future.

This issue is not about being overwhelmed, but about the inevitable structural changes that happen with growth.

Sure, I have been here only 5 weeks, but my instance has undergone 160% growth since then, because it is great place. #Mastodon in general has had only 30% growth. I am on an outlier #instance.

How big is too big, and should we be proactive?

I know we have @mastodonusercount for updates, but is there a place I can find an estimated tally or chart of entire users gained due to, or since, Elon taking over Twitter? Would love to get an idea of the overall migration numbers.
