If you're new to #Mastodon, my #advice is to follow the people you follow, or who follow you. Unfortunately, if you want to follow someone from another "instance", you need to do a daft cut and paste thingie- something that needs to get fixed!

I will say mastodon people have made me feel more welcome than on any previous “social” media. I hope you have the same great experience.
My advice is follow lots of people and be open to new things. I used to be primarily all about us poloitics but I appreciate the diversity of topics I find on mastodon. Happy Posting!

Also, a mastodon post is often called a “toot” & you amplify a toot by “boost” or in the case of my instance a “reblog.” A follow is a follow—whew!
When new here, I was told to follow & use hashtags liberally to connect.

Yes, I’m using the mastodon app for IOS! I’m a #MastodonNewbie & not tech savvy at all— is Toot an app or what?

Btw, I’m sighted but I was checking to make sure the caption was there. I found my caption when I noticed the word “ALT” on the picture I posted—I tapped it & a written version of my caption came up.
Hopefully people who need to have a different way to access it.

#mastodonnewbie and refugee from that other app here. Over there I was careful about following others cuz I understood bots & trolls were a big problem & I didn’t want to amplify them.
I haven’t noticed any inauthentic-seeming accounts over here on mastodon (yet?) I did see a post about a particular instance with inauthentically-behaving accounts. (Thot I bookmarked it but can’t find it.)
So, are bots & trolls a problem here? If so how do I spot them?

I tried clicking on the “handle”of the poster but it didn’t let me follow. So I resorted to memorizing the name & correct server for the poster I wanted to follow, then switching to search & tryin ta drag all the right info from my brain to click on the handle that came up in my search—just so I could follow. Exhausting just to type this!

May I know what does “boost” mean/entail on mastodon—so I may add it to my mastodon vocabulary list? Is it a good or bad thing?

So far I’ve learned “fediverse,” “instance,” “toot,” “reboot,” and “favorite.” Are there any other terms I should learn about?

@Thompson Thanks! I was one of those people who, on other social media saw an overuse of hashtags to no specific purpose except to seem “with it.”
Over here I’m led to understand #hashtags are not a bug, but a feature!
It’s a way for me to find toots & people of interest to me, since the fediverse has no algorithm where AI tries to divine what I want to see & shows it to me. I think I’m up to the challenge! #MastodonNewbie

Maybe the small communities of which you speak could find a niche here on mastodon by coordinating use of a certain instance and hashtags while still on Twitter. #MastodonNewbie here & I’ve found it was easy to fit in—People on mastodon are so willing to share their tips, info & knowledge.

So far I know Mastodon DOESN’T use algorithms to spoon feed us suggestions—I LOVE that because we’re less likely to be manipulated.

I’ve learned it’s up to me to seek out accounts that publish content of interest via #hashtags & so far I’ve followed some.

What I’m unsure of is where/how to use hashtags in things I PUBLISH—bio, posts & comments? Or other places?
