With its haunting melody, and the romantic myth that it was written by #HenryVIII as a love song for #AnneBoleyn, Greensleeves has remained popular over the centuries and today, is probably the best known of all #Tudor #songs.
However there is no proven connection to Henry VIII, and the earliest mention of the broadside ballad called #Greensleeves was not until September 1580, (some 33 years after his death). It was an immediate hit, and a number of imitations and parodies were produced in the following months and years.
Our recording uses the text from 'A Handful of Pleasant Delights', 1584 - the earliest surviving source. There are many verses, some of which contain lovely descriptions of #Elizabethan clothing and other aspects of #MaterialCulture
Richard de Winter: baritone
Robin Jeffrey: lute
Alison Kinder: bass viol

Craziness of last few months has meant barely any stitching but back to my 1771 pincushion pattern from the Lady’s Magazine. Embroidery scissors for scale #needlework #embroidery #georgian #eighteenthcentury #womenshistory #materialculture #fiberarts

Delighted that after unnecessary tussling (because I got a new job) that my database of Georgian needlework designs is back online. There are 150+ patterns on the site now. The next upload has been delayed but once I am back from a family holiday, I’ll get on to it. https://ladysmagazine.omeka.net #womenshistory #materialculture @fiberarts

Now that it's official, I'm excited to share that I'll be spending 6 months at the Smithsonian Institution next year doing research for my next book on women's political participation in early America. I'll be digging into genre paintings, portraits, prints, textiles, campaign memorabilia, and more!

✨ On Friday May 19, you can attend a (free) hybrid conference titled "Historical Fragments: Making, Breaking and Remaking" hosted by The Material and Visual Culture in the 17th and 18th Centuries Research Cluster, University of Edinburgh.
The conference "considers the materiality and shifting conditions of global objects and collections (focusing on the time period 1500-1800) as they are broken, fragmented, remade, or assembled. Seeking to investigate the ‘brokenness’ of such material culture objects and collections, the conference will de-centre conservation and restoration which often dominate discourse on the subject. The Research Cluster aims to provide a space to foster interdisciplinary discussion on the material approaches to fragmented objects through material culture."

Since then, I've done *a lot* more thinking about #MaterialCulture and printed circuit boards - and I'd add a lot more stuff on to that blog post! There's a lot to be gained from talking to the people who worked on these circuit boards and respecting the role of technical expertise in interpreting these objects. Makers' marks can tell us about the ecosystem in which these circuit boards were put together. And their "afterlives" are important too.
Nearly 2 years ago, I wrote this blog post thinking through printed circuit boards as #MaterialCulture: https://osnatkatz.com/2020/08/26/what-can-we-learn-from-printed-circuit-boards/
