This is the toughest month to have lungs in #southeastasia, as #fire for agricultural clearing creates thick haze blanketing the region. >200ppm in Southern #Laos when I snapped this pic overlooking the #Mekong river in Pakse.

Just this past November 2022 the #US #Japan #JUMPP committed to a $20 mil. funding package for #cleanenergy investment for the #Mekong sub-region. For lower income #indochina nation-states that fall w/in the river basin funding assistance for #environmental 'advancement' is welcome news, and a potential boon for reducing #PM25-related #risk & #impact. One key concern is whether this help will change decision-making prejudice that currently favours #fossilfuel sources?

There's the optics of the #phnompenh #rivers cleanup for the #ASEANsummit, then there is the visceral reality...A daily estimated release of 200 kg of #plasticswaste released into #Mekong, Tonlé Sap, and Bassac (42% of the city's #plasticpollution) during the #Monsoons. The summation of unrestrained/non-sustainable #economicdevelopment w/an under developed, under funded #wastemanagement scheme. It's not just cosmetic anymore.
