Happy 97th birthday to comedian/filmmaker Mel Brooks.

Here's video of him in 1970 in a bizarre discussion of whether Jewish mothers seriously think gay people exist (from an episode of THE DAVID SUSSKIND SHOW on which the main topic was what it means to be a Jewish son). This was the sort of casual "othering" of queer people that was common in American culture at the time.

The topic of homosexuality came up in the conversation because, in the wake of Stonewall the year before, the Gay Liberation movement had gained visibility and gayness had become a topical subject.
