This elaborate alarm clock from the 19th century prompted people to think about the shortness of life. When the alarm bell chimed, a small card running up the skeleton’s spinal column retracted to make the jaw open and the eyes roll. It's now at the Science Museum, London.

This 17th-century watch is a "memento mori," a reminder of the shortness of life. The inscription roughly translates: "Thus passes wordly glory remember your end." It was sold by Christies in 2017 for £12.5K.

Wax Vanitas (c.1700) - intended to remind us of the certainty of death. One side features a skull with insects feasting on decaying flesh. The other side resembles Queen Elizabeth I. It reads: “vanity of vanities, all is vanity.”

A tiny enamelled skull and crossbones on a background of hair in this golden mourning slide. The skull has a heart-shaped nasal cavity. The slide is inscribed for Sir John Kyrle who died 4 January 1679. Slides like this could be worn on a ribbon around the wrist or neck - the ribbon fits through the loops on either side.
