But okay, I keep reading because I've invested all this time and maybe the end will bring some peace of mind (only 100 pages to go)

Did the trying to break the character finally stop? Ofcourse not. She dared to get her life back together, so there was another rape scene after that, to that same character, again to drive the plot forward. 🤬

When you're enjoying a big (1100 pages) book until there is another attempt to violently break the 'strong independent female'™️ character at about 2/3 in and all suspense of annoyance over the cliche characters comes tumbling down...

"She was not much more than 1.5 meters in height, and her breasts, though shapely, were small. Yet she did not seem unripe. The nipples were large and the areolae dark, though that might be the result of her brownish skin color."
Isaac Asimov, "Foundation and Earth"

I'm not sure I can do this. This man was a pig and he was proud of it.

My interpretation of Cersei Lannister, for example, is far, far different from that of GRRM or D&D, because I refuse to base it solely on the text itself. I did a whole Twitter thread about that, and I'll recreate it here eventually. 5/5

I simply don't accept a cishet male author's statements about his female characters as "canon", especially when it comes to his female villains. I view it with the same type of skepticism with which I view a cishet man's account of his "crazy" ex-girlfriend. 4/5

A cishet male author has biases shaped by the misogynistic patriarchal culture that birthed him, reared him, and privileged him, and I expect those biases to manifest in his writing, especially with his female characters, so I view his words about them skeptically. 3/5.

These days, I always treat a cishet male author writing female characters, especially female villains, as if he were an unreliable narrator speaking from a perspective that has been filtered through the lens of his own biases, a voice that is neither objective nor omniscient. 2/5

In all seriousness, female characters written by cishet male authors are where I get the most Death-of-The-Authory in my consumption of fiction these days. 1/5
