Wow, what a great game.
It started off as a stealth tunnel shooter, evolved into an open-world almost-RPG, then went back into the tunnels for the finale.
Mechanics-wise, there's a ton of stuff here: (good) stealth, exploration, crafting, vehicles (cars and trains and boats, oh my!), and of course shooting.
Missions can be approached however the player wants, and areas are generally traversable in a variety of ways: go straight in and damn the torpedoes; sneak around the side or back; use ladders, ziplines, and stairs.
Narrative is the one of the primary focii of all the Metro games, and Exodus has the most involved story yet.

Instead of being locked into interminable cutscenes or reading walls of text, I get to hang out with my crew/family in the dining car as they discuss things or relax in a chair and have a drink while a friendly character vents about the internal politics of their group.
And if I've had enough, I can wander around the room and look at stuff while they talk, or even just walk out and continue about my business without a jarring "ok, I skipped the cutscene, now where did it drop me" transition.
