Every year, between November and March, millions of monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) migrate from Canada and the USA to overwinter in the mountains of Central #Mexico. There are six designated “sanctuaries” in the States of Mexico and #Michoacán, which can be partly visited and each one of those nature reserves can host between 7 and 20 million butterflies, depending on the year. It is a real wonder of nature.

On February 1, the P’urhepecha people of the State of #Michoacán, #Mexico, celebrate their “New Year” (kurhíkuaeri k'uinchekua) with the “lighting of the New Fire” (kurikaheri – or “big fire”). Every year a different P’urhepecha town is selected to host the lighting ceremony and guard the fire for one year. In 2023, the town of Erongarícuaro was chosen as the location of the festivities and in 2024, the town of Ocumicho will have that high honor.
