Fantastic first set of talks for #MicroEvo22 this morning! First gene-gene interactions in microbial community by Fiona Whlean, then the evolution of S. suis to gain virulence and infect new niches (humans!) and why and now role of the capsule in evolution

#Introduction

I’m a Post-doc at the University of Oxford, working on the evolution of bacterial genomes and pangenomes. I’m interested in bacterial cooperation and ecology, and how these might interact with horizontal gene transfer.

I’m on the train to Manchester for the #MicroEvo22 meeting, where I’ll be presenting a poster (no. 17). Looking forward to seeing lots of you there!

Here is a plot of the proportion of microbiology papers that are about microbial evolution: this has grown consistently since 2000 and in 2021 made up >12% of microbiology papers (or 9700/78000)

As organisers we are debating whether to have a table seating plan for the #MicroEvo22 conference dinner?

Possible advantages are it generates new connections especially for ECRs and students and stops people just interacting with their existing clique of friends/collaborators

On the other hand telling people where to sit seems a tad forced/controlling and might break-up the flow of socialising after the poster session

Any thoughts?

After only launching our #MicrobialEvolution theme in 2021 #MicroEvo22 will be the largest scientific meeting hosted by #MicrobiologySociety this year except for the Annual Congress
