I've been somewhat quiet these last few weeks as there were things to do... Yesterday, I finally presented my #research on #earlymodern #siege #warfare to the faculty at @unibwm. #HabilKolloquium

Was warfare in the era of "cabinet warfare" and #Enlightenment becoming more humane? A #microhistory inquiry reveals that the practices of siege warfare remained horrendous (as they still are!), but also that sensibilities for this suffering were raised - and even voiced by practitioners of war.

A recent NYT article about tracing family history from old photos (https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2022/11/23/magazine/italy-photos.html) reminded me of this, and my wife pointed me to the #MicroHistory tag.

I'm realizing that most of the #OaklandHistory research I do is of this form, focusing on a single person (or family) or event or even a photo.

It took people seven years to convince me to join Tw*tree and then within six months of getting to grips with it, Elon Musk arrives and all went belly-up. I’m on social media to learn historical things, particularly #localhistory #socialhistory #britishhistory #demographichistory #microhistory #earlymodernhistory though I’m open to anything. My research interests are demographic crises, early modern social structure and family reconstitution. Now I just need to find someone to follow.

A #OnePlaceStudy can be of a single building, such as a house. Other buildings can be the subjects of #OnePlaceStudies too - institutions for example, or commercial premises. If there are records available which you can use to research the history of the building and its people, it can be an OPS.
