For Dylan Chivian, staying connected with the natural world goes hand in hand with his work as a microbial scientist and coding engineer with the Systems Biology Knowledgebase (). When he's not building software tools he's out seeking adventure.

A fantastic thorough study on viral ecology within built environments!

“Consistent with the differences in diversity and structure between bacterial communities in air and on surfaces, the airborne and surface-borne viromes in the present study were distinct. The use of advanced ventilation and filtration systems may explain the lower virome diversity in subway air than in air from venues using natural ventilation.”

I just released gcplyr v1.5.0 on github.

gcplyr is an package that makes it easy to wrangle and do model-free analyses of growth curve data

mikeblazanin.github.io/gcplyr/

v1.5.0 includes:
- fixes for critical bugs in derivative calculation
- improved handling of NA values, including several new functions
- new function for linear interpolation
- new args when calculating area under the curve

Blooms of pose a significant threat to systems including rivers driving both and its dire implications for freshwater species as oxygen availability plummets and also the additional threat posed by produced by some Cyanobacteria.

This new research in Scientific Reports takes a and Q-PCR approach to explore the composition of the Cyanobacterial populations and their cyanotoxin production gene in major rivers across the United States (in 2019) and identifies Microcystis as the key toxin producing genus across this study.

As we (humans) get to grips with how to scale up as an energy source (and for energy storage) and as part replacement for , this new research (once again) shows that have beaten us to it and evolved their own solutions for energy - in this case using hydrogen power.

This new research in Nature Microbiology explores how hydrogen in seawater supports growth of multiple and diverse species.

Fof those (like me) in , you may be interested that the research also includes study of this process within sediments.
