"...As Tony Haile once smartly put it, news subscriptions are like gym memberships. Imagine a gym that charges $50 a month for a membership โ€” but also lets anyone pop in for a single workout for two bucks. ... โ€œIf you would take the version of a gym membership, it would be like, โ€˜I can turn up and I can pay a couple of quid, and I can go into the gym whenever I want to use it.โ€™ No gym works like that.โ€

One option for creative types to monetize their work with would be to do all your posting on a personal blog, linked to the fediverse via ActivityPub. That way, people could follow from any fedi account.

Your photos/art/words would generate a penny or two per view (or more, dunno the details), allowing you to monetize without ads and still share your work basically for free.

(Someone please tell me if this arrangement wouldn't work.)

A privacy preserving system that happens mostly in the background is badly needed!

I so often want to pay for an article from a news site or just kick down to some random personal site that gave me a laugh, but I'm not going to keep setting up accounts and being surveilled by yet more vampires.

Ads generate tiny revenues (often less than a penny per view) for most sites, but more if they're targeted. That's why the ad-based model inherently incentivizes surveillance.
