#Baltimore could hit temperature benchmark not reached in years
A heat dome that has been pumping brutal heat into the Southwest is shifting eastward, unleashing some of the hottest weather in years into the mid-Atlantic.
By Brian Lada, AccuWeather meteorologist and staff writer
Published Jul 25, 2023 12:17 PM EDT | Updated Jul 26, 2023 1:08 PM EDT
"A #HeatDome that has been parked over the southwestern #UnitedStates throughout most of July is starting to expand eastward, and millions of people in the #MidAtlantic will soon feel the effects.
"The temperature in Baltimore is predicted to top out around 100 degrees Fahrenheit at the end of the week, the hottest it has been in both cities in years. The temperature could also make a run at triple digits in #WashingtonDC, but may fall a few degrees short with highs on Thursday and Friday in the upper 90s.
"'It has not yet reached 100 in either city this year,' AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Bill Deger said. 'In fact, it has not even gotten into the upper 90s yet in Washington.'
"The most recent 100-degree temperature reading in D.C. was seven years ago when the city experienced triple-digit heat for three consecutive days, ending on Aug. 15, 2016. The mercury in Baltimore reached this benchmark more recently when back-to-back 100-degree readings occurred on July 19-20, 2020.
"'When factoring in the sunshine and high humidity levels, the AccuWeather RealFeel® Temperature will easily exceed 100 degrees each day in both cities and perhaps could rise as high as 110,' Deger said. 'This will make some outdoor activities dangerous for extended periods of time.'"

AccuWeather meteorologists put #Northeast on alert for serious #FlashFlood risk
Over half a foot of rain can fall amid the deluge spanning Sunday to Tuesday, including over areas that were hit hard by flooding and mudslides to end this past week.
Locations where the ground is saturated from rainfall to end the week will face a higher likelihood of gusty winds knocking over trees and power lines in any of the more intense thunderstorms.

"People across the Northeast are encouraged to stay #WeatherAware over the coming days as a swath of tropical moisture can result in damaging consequences from the #Carolinas to #Maine. In some locations, a month's worth of rain could fall in a matter of hours, according to AccuWeather's expert team of forecasters.
"A slow-moving weather system is expected to tap into moisture from the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean as it slowly turns northeastward Sunday into Tuesday. This path will direct a swath of heavy rainfall across part of the #MidAtlantic and #NewEngland.
"By midday Sunday, high water and flooded roadways were reported in numerous locations throughout eastern and southeastern #Pennsylvania, prompting flash flood warnings across numerous counties. Rainfall amounts upwards of 2-4 inches had already fallen across the region by Sunday afternoon in drenching storms, according to local observation sites, with additional moisture on the way."

I don't know if it's MASN, the MLB, or whoever owns the O's, but today marked the 5th time this season I couldn't watch an Orioles game cause it was on some streaming service I didn't get. If you don't want me to watch baseball, just say it then!

Today's City Cast #Pittsburgh podcast is a debate about whether Pittsburgh is part of #Appalachia, the #MidAtlantic, or the #Midwest. I haven't listened to it get, but I find the comment they quote from an Instagram follower from West Virginia compelling:
“As a native of W.Va. I can confirm it is the Paris of ✨ Appalachia ✨ It’s quite literally a northern extension of W.Va. and we still have pepperoni rolls here.”
And the quote from "Brittany" definitely aligns with my experience of Pittsburgh:
“I’ve lived in the Midwest (Wisconsin) and the east coast (Maryland, Georgia, Philly area) and Pittsburgh is both and neither. Pittsburghers are aggressively nice and loudly accommodating. They’re their own unique brand of weird and I love it.”
If someone from Appalachia says it's Appalachian and someone who has lived on the east coast and in the Midwest says it's "both and neither", then it sounds like "Paris of Appalachia" it is.
"Mid-Atlantic" was the first term I heard for the region, but there isn't general agreement on what that is, and there aren't strong cultural similarities across it. Meanwhile, southwest PA and West Virginia have a lot in common culturally. Which makes sense given that WV is a lot closer to Pittsburgh than Philadelphia is.

Lows tonight are going to be absurdly warm in the #OhioValley and #MidAtlantic. Large swath of 30 degrees above normal with some places pushing 40 degrees above normal.
Some warmest low temperatures in January on record inbound.

@jeridansky Sorry to hear that. Gosh about the rain. We have had a little, and no snow so far. Just a gloomy foggy day today with warm sunshine expected tomorrow. Even the bitter cold, which we had, was not nearly as bad as other places in the country. The #MidAtlantic appears to be escaping a lot of the worst weather I've noted. Or at least that's how it appears to me. Also Happy New Year to you!
The remnants of #Nicole will pass by the #DC area and #MidAtlantic Friday.
Since we're on the east side of the system traveling up the Appalachians, a few tornadoes are possible in a high shear environment, in addition to waves of briefly heavy rain.
