Brilliant quote from Drachinifel: "You had to be an octopus high on Panzerschokolade trying to play the pipe organ in order to keep everything working" 😂

Delighted to announce the release of my new book Life of a Medical Officer in World War One. Out this coming April, not only does it give a first-hand account of the carnage at Arras, the Somme and Ypres, but also a light-hearted assessment of military red tape, regiment life, trench foot and lice! A compelling read. Lots more to share over the up-coming weeks.

Today's the day!
On this day in 1940 two plucky soldiers from the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders made their escape from a German prisoner of war camp.
You can read how they came to be there and how well they fared here:-

Oh! Battle of Trafalgar, tragedy of the sea
The death of Nelson, commander of the fleet

War winds blew hard, the sea a raging storm
French and Spanish fleets, a formidable force

The British held fast, despite the odds
But fate had plans, Nelson taken by God

The Battle of Trafalgar, day of sorrow and grief
Neptune’s kraken of war bared his horrible teeth

Colour (silent) footage from WW2 of Canadian tankers training on M1917s and Vickers light tanks at CFB Borden, either winter '39-40 or '40-41. The base was also part of the British Commonwealth Air Training Program. @militaryhistory

Random stuff from the archives about badges for the 1st Canadian Armoured Personnel Carrier Regiment, late 1944, who used Ram tanks with the turrets taken off (Ram Kangaroos) to transport infantry. There was concern about the regimental spirit! @militaryhistory

Tragedy in the desert, 1941. Act 1, Scene 1: "In this action two of our tanks were knocked out, commanded by Maj Sandbach and Sgt Clark, but there were fortunately no casualties and both crews were picked up unhurt. Maj Sandbach was commanding Capt Threlfall’s tank at the time and it was unfortunate that it had on board large stocks of rum and whiskey." 8 KRIH war diary, 27 November 1941. I'm excited. I'll be getting periodic emails from Harbor Defense Museum today about the 13th Reg. Bandsmen. The first one has already come in an article published this day (11 Jan) in 1907 in The Brooklyn Citizen.

I'm reading a book right now, Neptune's Inferno, about the US Navy's campaign for Guadalcanal in the South Pacific during . It's interesting how familiar some of the ideas were in this particular passage.

Anyone know anything about the 13th regiment Bandsmen? This picture shows my 2nd great-grandfather with two of his brothers& a couple of unknown men at Ft. Hamilton, Brooklyn, New York.

Further information: I have only found a WWI and WWII draft card for Harold Conklin who lived from 1884-1948. Vernon lived from 1885-1959 & Warren lived from 1889-1964. I only did a quick search on Fold3 for records on Vernon& Warren with no luck.

Ship Street Barracks, Dublin. Built in the early 1800s for the engineers of the Board of Ordnance, this gateway was designed by Francis Johnston. The barracks formed part of the larger Dublin Castle garrison, which was enlarged after the uprisings of 1798 & 1803.
