Denethor ist eine der tragischen Figuren im Herrn der Ringe. Als Vater keine Leuchte, bevorzugt er seinen Erstgeborenen Boromir und verachtet seinen jüngeren Sohn Faramir. Als Truchseß dazu verdammt, Minis Tirith zu verwalten und auf die Rückkehr des Königs von Gondor zu warten, zerbricht er und verfällt dem Wahnsinn.
