When the opposition has resorted to ruthless authoritarianism (and in some cases naked fascism), it’s not enough to be the pro-democracy sensible adults who can reach the common middle-ground. You actually have to be actively undermining and subverting the authoritarian basis of political power. That is what #MintTheCoin would have done, and the fact Bidenworld went out of its way to rule out the possibility of doing that says everything about what to expect when the opposition continues to grow rather than shrink. You only need to look at Renzi, Calenda and even Conte to see where that road goes.
@rbreich Again, as you very well know, Bob. The GOP never had a credible threat that they could force the US to default on its debt. It was always entirely within the unchecked power Congress already granted to the President to #MintTheCoin and render the debt ceiling irrelevant. Everyone knows this. Lordy, you’ve even demonstrated that *you* know this. So, we can maybe dispense now with the fiction that the GOP brought us anywhere near the brink of catastrophe. They simply did not have the power to do that. Only President Biden did, and he wisely chose a path that avoided it.
I complain, but will grudgingly admit that if the latest round of the #DebtCeilingComedy ends with the debt ceiling raised, the same budget we would have gotten without it but sooner because time pressure, and the GOP Speaker of the House turfed out by the snake eaters, then that’s still a win for the Biden team. Of course, I’d prefer the debt ceiling were neutralized by #MintTheCoin but I’m not insane. I’ll take the win, if we can get it.

I know the various “history repeats as farce” aphorisms but I really hope we don’t follow the Moron Global Pandemic with the Great Depression For The Dumbest Possible Reason

Of course, there are lots of other possibilities: Biden could issue an #ExecutiveOrder to the effect that the Debt Ceiling violates the #14thAmendment. Or that it violates the #ContractsClause. Or he could order the Treasury to start issuing #CouponFreeBonds. Or he could just #MintTheCoin:

Yes, each of these would end up in front of the (degraded, corrupt, illegitimate, partisan) Supreme Court, who would very likely strike them down.

https://www.msnbc.com/opinion/msnbc-opinion/biden-debt-ceiling-default-options-rcna85796 Yet another frustrating splainer. Behold as it explains how Biden is totally in control, he can #MintTheCoin at his convenience, end the #DebtCeilingComedy unilaterally and leave the GOP gasping for air with egg on its collective face. But that obviously won’t happen for reasons that are left totally unexplained. It’s a goddamn mystery for the ages. Even asking why this is happening is unthinkable.

Ok, I’m convinced we need to #mintthecoin after reading @Pwnallthethings here https://www.pwnallthethings.com/p/mint-the-coin
So, a crazy gimmick could grab the economy out of the Republicans’ destructive hands and keep the government functioning, sending their tantrums out the door? I love this idea! #MintTheCoin

What am I talking about? This: https://thehill.com/policy/energy-environment/4012961-79-house-democrats-express-concern-over-gop-permitting-reform-as-debt-limit-talks-continue/
Like I said, none of this shit would get any serious attention if the President were to #MintTheCoin. He could tell the GOP to go pound sand, and this “permitting reform” bullshit would die in the House like the abortion ban and every other stupid thing the GOP wants to do.
But you see, Democrats actually want to do this. Most of the just want to be seen pretending to be forced into it, rather than happily going along willingly. Fundamentally dishonest. Abjectly immoral. Lying thieving bastards every last one.
You’re not hearing much about it now, but after it passes, you’ll hear a lot about it: the “permitting reform” that Biden has put on the table as bipartisan offer to get Republicans to help him evade the need to #MintTheCoin, that shit is truly awful, and it’s going to truly demoralize Democratic voters who care about climate change. It’s a straight up betrayal, and there’s no sugar coating it. Voters will be pissed, and they will not believe claims that Democrats are better on climate than the GOP.
Interesting, and surprisingly persuasive, story from Marketplace yesterday on what is the debt ceiling, the "mint the coin" proposal to solve it, etc.

Oh for fuck’s sake. Just #MintTheCoin and avoid all the chaos. There will be no chaos. The checks will clear. The treasury debt instruments will still go up for auction. Everything will be perfectly normal. The only “chaos” will be inside the GOP itself when they recognize they can’t even get the Supreme Court to help them out. Just mint the goddamn coin.

Notice how the finally mention in the last paragraph that “other less popular proposals include [#MintTheCoin]” which is otherwise left unexplained.
Because explaining it would clearly demonstrate just how stupid are all of the preceding answers they just finished excreting.

As I understand it the executive must exhaust all legal options before appealing to a constitutional principle. The coin is straightforward and perfectly legal.
@lauren Don’t even bother daring the Supreme Court to decide what the 14th Amendment means. Believe me, you really don’t want to turn Justice Thomas loose on that question. Just #MintTheCoin and dare them to rule that the US doesn’t have the power to coin money, because that is NEVER going to happen. Just #MintTheCoin. Mint. The. Damned. Coin.
