The Mitchell Library in Glasgow looking magnificent as ever in today's spring sunshine.

It was designed in the Edwardian Baroqie Style by WB Whitie and built in the early 1900s.

The main facade to the former St Andrew's Halls on Granville Street in Glasgow.

Heavily influenced by Alexander 'Greek' Thomson, these neoclassical halls were designed by James Sellars, with sculptures by the legendary John Mossman, and were built in 1877. The two Atlantes by the doors were by William Mossman

You'll see figures like this one from the Mitchell Library holding up buildings all over Glasgow. They are an architectural feature called an Atlas (also known as Atlant, Atlante or Atlantid).

They are carved male figures that replace columns and are named after the Ancient Greek Titan forced to hold up the sky on his shoulders for all eternity.
