This honey bee (Apis mellifera) has met its end. However, its utility has not. A group of Valentine ants (likely Crematogaster ashmeadi) were diligently working on recycling it.

For I'd like to introduce y'all to Protacarus - a fossil (!?) from the ~410 million year old Rhynie Chert, . This little is a member of a group that is still around today (Endeostigmata, possibly in the family Alycidae). Some modern examples of this family eat nematode worms - which we also have preserved in Rhynie, believe it or not. Perhaps what this little dude/tte did for food?

And finally, in another first for me, a predatory prostigmatid mite (Eupodidae sp.) running around on the water surface like that's no big thing! I certainly didn't know they could do that... did you?

A predatory mite (family Bdellidae) doing what it does best - feeding on a springtail. Having a mite skewer your head with its pointed chelicerae isn't the nicest way to go, but fascinating to observe!

Australia has had a recent incursion of Varroa mites, perhaps still under control. Here is an overview of the situation and what could happen if the mite spreads throughout the country:

I'm a magnet for interesting mite nymphs at the moment - here's the larval stage of a whirligig mite (Anystidae) feeding on the nymph of a turtle mite (Uropodina)*. I can confirm that whirligig nymphs are just as fast and hard to photograph as the adults!

*At first I thought it was feeding on an Astigmatid hypopus, but those long seta on the front legs are throwing me toward Uropodina/dae - second opinions welcome!

It's Monday so here's a mite. Possibly Poecilochirus. Members of genus are typically found hitching rides on beetle species that are bound for carrion. Once there, mites hop off and eat rotting meat, fly eggs, or beetle eggs. Slime mold fruiting bodies for scale.

This little beauty is an Oribatid (Cepheus) mite nymph. Each ring of ornate scales on the mite's back are a previously moulted exoskeleton!

I've been trying to get a good photo of these for so long, and it turns out all I had to do was go looking around the research station grounds where I work.

It's !

Here's an adorable (unless you're a springtail) snout mite (Bdellidae). These active predators are constantly running around on logs, stones and the soil surface looking for prey to puncture with their piercing mouthparts.

If you'd like to see a larval velvet mite, here's one attached to a robber fly. A rather common photobomber of arthropods pics. inaturalist.org/observations/1

Predatory in the family . It was tiny but unbelievably fast. Jillian Cowles, in her book, Amazing Arachnids, describes them nicely as the "jaguars of the mite world". Some species in the family apparently use webs to catch prey.

It was such a pleasure to talk about the many benefits of soil fauna macrophotography at yesterday. What a wonderful conference, and chance to see so many friends old and new!
