: I was taking a photo of this red velvet mite (family Trombidiidae) when I noticed something on its butt. To my great surprise, it was another mite—a mesostigmatid, which are often hitchhikers on other arthropods. I haven't seen anything similar on trombidiids before, to my knowledge. Anyone know what's going on here?

: It's crowded in the garden during Peak Anystid! Yesterday I saw a whirligig mite (family Anystidae) eating a small plant bug (family Miridae) when a second mite came along and had a bite. The first mite stopped feeding, but did keep one foot on the bug, as if to call dibs. It wasn't long before a third mite happened upon the kill and also helped itself to the bug.

For , here's a little oribatid I found under the bark of a rotting log in a very wet meadow. Unlike the poppyseed-like galumnoids I've posted before, this one has a clear division between head and abdomen. I'm a magnet for interesting mite nymphs at the moment - here's the larval stage of a whirligig mite (Anystidae) feeding on the nymph of a turtle mite (Uropodina)*. I can confirm that whirligig nymphs are just as fast and hard to photograph as the adults!

*At first I thought it was feeding on an Astigmatid hypopus, but those long seta on the front legs are throwing me toward Uropodina/dae - second opinions welcome!

This fallen tree in High Park's oak savannah was covered with absolutely tiny clover mite (_Bryobia_) nymphs. Note the six legs (they'll have eight as adults).

It's Monday so here's a mite. Possibly Poecilochirus. Members of genus are typically found hitching rides on beetle species that are bound for carrion. Once there, mites hop off and eat rotting meat, fly eggs, or beetle eggs. Slime mold fruiting bodies for scale.

: last spring, at the foot of a birch tree in the park, I found a red velvet mite (probably _Allothrombium_) feeding on a molting crab spider (_Xysticus_ or _Bassaniana_ or the like). The spider had just regenerated a leg, too.
