We know that are not required for mitotic division, so what are they good for?

New preprint from grad student KC Farrell shows that having two duplicated centrosomes at the beginning of facilitates rapid bipolar spindle formation. In the absence of centrosomes there is a checkpoint-mediated delay that is required to give enough time to sort things out and assemble the spindle.
