Getting the heated metal patina look on a couple of 1/72 Bristol Mercury exhaust collector rings the old fashioned way by dry brushing metallic shades. Metallic grey base, then dark copper in the first pic, and bronze in the second. The granular look is a lighting artifact, they are smoother in real life
As a mod, I'm the one who usually posts tips and whatnot (if I need to use an example of a hashtag, it's always #ModelPlanes π©οΈπ) about how this place works.
I overuse gifs and emoji and I regret nothing. :laserkiwi:
I also try to get around and welcome all the new folk but sometimes things get a bit busy. You're welcome to reach out to me any time, especially if you're new here and still finding your way around. There's also loads of other nice folks here who will help you if you get stuck.
Top tips:
Familiarise yourself with the rules of your instance, and your admins.
If you like columns, enable the advanced web interface on web.
There are a bunch of great apps. Tusky is my rec for Android, Metatext is great for iOS, and there's more.
Accessibility matters. Capitalise your hashtags like this #ModelPlanes please.

Two more days of work for the year then I'm on a break for almost three weeks and that means #ModelPlanes! :partyparrot:
Very much looking forward to finally having the time and chill to play with some paper planes and assemble the model P-40B that some lovely soul got me for the last round of Secret Santa mid year. π€ π©οΈ
(I know this person is also on Mastodon, so they'll be able to see me finally having some fun with these!π₯°)
Ata mΔrie Mastodon! π¦£
Today's tip of the day is about accessibility (yes, again).
Use alt text (image descriptions) please.
Thread including some instructions, the world's worst diagram, and emotional blackmail in the form of the Puss in Boots face here:
https://mastodon.nz/@explorergrace/109437323896350259
Please also use camel case on your hashtags like this #ModelPlanes so screen readers can read it much easier.
We want everyone to be able to enjoy Mastodon.
Thanking you! :blobcockatiel:
Not had much to report until now.
Lidl has airfix starter kits as of the 1st of Dec.
So it would be rude not to when they sell them at such a discounted price.
So tonight I bought 2 kits, there were others available but these 2 are subjects I've wanted for a while.
Not being built until the dapol pug is done.
These will be hopefully built and photoed as I go to make YouTube videos or shorts.

If you want to see a real oddball #TinyPlanes how about this one. Powered by a capacitor/motor power pack designed for #PaperPlanes This #FreeFlight one is 190mm wingspan weighs the square root of not a lot and flies for about two minutes. It will reach the roof of an indoor basketball court, and flies a consistant reliable circuit.

@explorergrace speaking of #ModelPlanes β¦. My dad worked for Air NZ for years (back from when they were TEAL).
I used to go into his office and they had loads of huge (1m long) scale fibreglass models of their aircraft. I wanted one so bad.
I swear I do talk about stuff other than how things work here (whispers #ModelPlanes π©οΈ) but with so many new folk here, I shall be merrily tooting about how things work awhile longer.
PSA! The report function is your friend. If you see bad behaviour (see our rules https://mastodon.nz/about/more), please report it (if in doubt, reach out). Every report is reviewed by human mods, so the report function can't be abused. We can & will take action where necessary. :laserkiwi:
Thanking You! :birdheart:
