@deilann The problem is that proactive screening of signups doesn't really work and demaning it would most likely just be weaoinized to demand all social networks to instate "ID Verification" instead...

Which is a terrible idea for more reasons than it could 'fix'...

I'd only thing that works is and enforcement of rules...

Personally, I'd rather deny-list all and from that have or are known for instead.

@SarahOestreich I point at because instead of they choose to not even fake to care.

I mean, it's one thing if one controls a monolithic / system or can only mitigate stuff because bad actors don't reply to abuse reports...

By joining said instances or services (in the case of BlueSky) any user does -knowingly or not - say "This is not a problem I give a damn about!"

Please get rid of excuses to support bad actors!

@alastor8472 Well I haven't seen a single or leadership role advertised for any of them - And if they are going to use the team leadership they used to have, they are going to carry on with the crap they used to have all over again. I cringe when I hear interviews with some of them - somehow seeming proud that they learned their trade "on the job".

That's not how and works.

Was hat die Tagesschau denn da heute für wilde Experimente mit der Moderation gemacht?! 😅

(Ich fand’s ganz spannend zu beobachten, was das mit einen macht a la zack, gleich ne etwas andere Aufmerksamkeit für die Themen…)

This was such a great article by @malwaretech about a major way Mastodon is so much different from everything else that not enough people bring up. Hint: it has to do with:

1. Not being an ad-driven experience
2. How moderation works in the Fediverse

A thoughtful read and a reminder that, largely, I think we’re building a pretty great culture here.

@HeavenlyPossum @comebackkid44723 @ItsTrainingCatsAndDogs Case in point you'll end up with structures that are the very definition of a government and thus a state.

You'll even find these structures in the :fediverse: , may it be [de], , signups, rules, etc.

Because these are independent of the economy, as the non-profit nature of most mastodon instances show.

I'll throw it out here. I want to host a instance and get my contemporary art friends (and their friends and colleagues) on it. I've been able to find accounts that will repost contemporary artists but most of the art I find on here is photography or illustration and I would like a wider variety.

My issue is that while I think I could do a decent job with server admin as that's a skill set I've been honing for years, I have zero content moderation experience. Not trying to start something without that given the state of things. How would one begin this process?

...demanded for in the EU’s are not going to help. They are setting dangerous precedents for a two-tier system that is going to benefit some very prolific producers of disinformation and hatred online: Think in , the in the , or any state-affiliated outlet in and . There's a reason why even temporary ‘must carry’ obligations have been rejected in the and they should absolutely not be added to . [4/8]

@atomicpoet @alter_kaker and have dire and utterly inflexible practices, as we all know. I am a little worried about how much extra load moderating the unpaid lobby servers would put onto unpaid volunteers.

What @harriettmb said.

Forwarding the to the offender's admin gives that instance the opportunity to suspend the transphobic and/or racist asshole. They can't solve a problem they don't know about.

It also alerts your local admin to the problem. If the forwarded report is ignored, your admin can consider defederating from the problem instance, protecting all your local neighbors. Hashtag FediBlock is for just this kind of work.

The Headline would read: "Tiny instance owner seeks partner."

"Likes to operate the old fashioned way... keep organized and lean forward."

Referrals. Most. Welcome.

Q: How to find competent assistance in the ?

Q: For the longer term, an expanded support model? Can engineering be "federalized" to benefit small operators? Is diversity is at stake?

@mastodonmigration @profcarroll

Case in point: As I expect this to set a precedent, handling - regard liss or lack of , will get fine-tuned over time.

I think the overall outcome is good and if admins are scared that their lack of care will have defederation as consequence, then maybe that's a necessary price to pay.

Just like I'd certainly face consequences if I were to leave a machine unmaintained online for ages.

The only proven to work method is to have actual in the :fediverse: and defederate :activitypub: instances that refuse to do so.

@volkris @sam yes and no.

AFAICT doesn't bother to do any but just users into convenient and - as did and still does...

I'd rather choose a instance maintained by people who care [i.e. @stux] instead, and for those that want total control, & is still an option.

So if anyone wants to deal with absolute trash instances that get universally defederated, they can do so.
