Water, Wealth, Contentment, Husky (this particularly goofy one!)
So I'm drinking tea and watching a massive thunderstorm, as a friggin' tornado warning woke me up at 3:45 a.m.
This style of house has nowhere to take cover, but the NWS' track suggests that anything would pass north of us.
I keep thinking today is Monday, because that’s usually the day Dad and I have lunch at Smokey’s. The Friday steak & mushroom dip is epic, though.
Smokey’s was a cherished local restaurant when I was a tike, closed for many years, then reopened out by the swankier car lots, in a light industrial strip.
This, in turn, replaced this fabulous 1872 courthouse, which exudes frontier prosperity. #Modesto was only two years old when this was built.
Source: Modesto Then & Now.
The new courthouse replaces the generically modern building from 1938, designed by Oakland #architect Russell Guerne de Lappe, whose parents lived in #Modesto.
(Description of linked image: A generic mid-century institutional building, 4 stories high plus annexes and a basement. Awnings over the short rows of windows suggest someone was aware of Streamline Moderne but skeptical.)
Back on New Year's Day, we got to admire the rising shell of the new courthouse, then up to 8 stories.
In pursuit of a "your word for 2023" photo challenge, I took a shot today at photographing the #Modesto arch, built in 1912 to showcase the arrival of electricity, thanks to the canal system (the letters light up).
This puppy is difficult to photograph -- I'm perched on the median on the "bad" side of 9th Street, and it's very disobliging how much of downtown got "renewed" to not be a nice streetscape.
One of the themes of the pre-1890 period in #Modesto is that civic leaders built elaborate Italianate, Queen Anne, and Gothic Revival mansions that are all (except one) gone.
Unlike eastern cities, Modesto went into a rapid growth phase in the post-WWII era, plus there was huge wave of demolition in the 1950s-60s due to building code changes for seismic protection.

What I should be doing is reading from my backlog of local history books. I’m starting with a picture book because it’s that kind of day. #Modesto #localhistory
So what about 2023?
My goals are:
1. Deal with my backlog of pics for places we've been, as there are lots! Tons of train photos!
2. Check out local museums.
3. Create the ultimate donut list.
4. Get my ass in gear to start writing about architecture and neighborhoods. It takes planning.
What do you suggest I check out in the Central Valley?
7. While we're on food, The Fruit Yard is our local version of a classic kind of California stop: restaurant, gas station, and store that sells dried fruit, pies, and such. The restaurant makes the best pancakes and bacon I've found locally.
6. To compensate for pizza disappointments, the DONUT scene is amazing. There's Mr T's Delicate Donut, voted 13th best in the nation. There's Scotty's, where you don't go for the ambiance but you do go for the raised donuts. This particular donut is probably from Tony's, a funky ol' shack that does a great cake donut.

5. While we're doing food, I have to admit disappointment in the local pizza scene. I lived in New Haven, CT, which has the best #pizza in the U.S.
However, I get to have my childhood fave, Round Table, a regional chain that's as close in style to New Haven apizza as we're likely to get here.

3. Also, while we're downtown, Michelin Gallery! I'd wondered how I suddenly got into local art (admittedly, mostly at the greeting card level)... and it's because this gallery does so much to make it available.
Here's one of my favorite images, the TIllie Lewis water tower, by water color artist Virginia White. #Modesto #EmuYE
