(21) Favorite LICENSED RPG

First a couple of honorable mentions. Modiphius' Robert E Howard's Conan for the care taken with the material. West End Games' Star Wars out of nostalgia. Both are solid examples of what can be done with a license.

My current favorite is Star Trek Adventures. It does a good job of supporting the "hyper-competent science nerds solving problems IN SPACE" game I want when running Star Trek.

Has to be the #Modiphius #2d20 system. It's such a fun/slick system, and I love the minor tweaks they do with each game to match the feel of whatever world they're working in.

Favourite game using it is hands down #Conan2d20 with honourable mentions to #AchtungCthulhu #FalloutRPG and #JohnCarterOfMars

It's a toss up:

2d20 is a pile of moving parts, but it runs nicely and builds up speed through a session. 2d20 adapts well to a variety of settings from Starfleet officers doing space stuff in Star Trek Adventures to the savage violence of Robert E Howard's Conan. There are some tricky bits - spaceship combat is a hurdle for any system - but I enjoy it.

#Modiphius almost had me considering #FantasyGrounds, because they have the official license for #Dune. But Foundry has spoiled me; I do way too much home brew to put out the money for Ultimate (which is the only FG option hat makes any sense value-wise).

Just Played:

Today, I joined an in-progress Star Trek TNG-era #TTRPG campaign. My caracter is Lt Cmdr Alexandra Chao, the new securirty chief of the Sovereign-class USS Endurance, under command of Capt. Doolittle.

The game started out using #Modiphius' #2d20 system, but the players & GM thought that ruleset was too heavy, so they switched over to #CortexRPG, and converted the characters.

Most of the session was bringing me up to speed with story & game system. Looking forward to next game!

Later today, the USS Bellerophon will attempt to rescue someone who has telepathically called for help from a planetoid station hidden in the Nautilus Nebula. On the plus side, they've made it to sensor range of the station without being detected (thanks to the nebula itself, and the amazing sensors on the Bellerophon). #StarTrekAdventures #Modiphius #TTRPG

Speaking of #IndieTTRPG publisher, that's a term I personally find inadequate for meaningfully large publishers like #Modiphius, #FreeLeague, #Chaosium, #MagpieGames, #Cubicle7, many others, or even #Paizo

I'd call them "Major" or "Boutique" publishers.

They would benefit from your, and deserve it more than #WotC.

They might not spontaneously send out free review/test copies but, if you're a content creator, you can politely message them for free PDFs. They're very likely to send one.

#Modiphius #Dune2d20 setting and characters evoke Dune well. Playing with metacurrency does make for interesting moments that feel earned.

Dueling being movement of weapons across body zones was so counterintuitive that we just SKIPPED a dramatic encounter rather than learning how to run duels last night.

People who design games are tapping out on the complexity. I've read the rules to the espionage & intrigue sections and find it more intuitive than a simple brawl despite shared mechanics

Last weekend on #StarTrekAdventures (and on Discord), the USS Sienkiewicz Away Team try to convince the colonists to leave the planet being pulled into the accretion disk of the black hole "Das Schwarze Auge".

Meanwhile the Away Team and the last 70 evacuees are trapped in the shielded colony as the atmo becomes an ion storm thanks to multiple nearby asteroid strikes. Their only hope lies in the unique crystals known as gravitronium.
