The new animated Netflix The Monkey King (2023) is 1 hour and and 28 minutes long.

I managed to watch 7.5 minutes before turning it off.

I've seen dozens of versions of the Monkey King Story and this is IMHO THE WORST ONE EVER!

Started watching #MoneyHeist on NF. Interesting so far, and I don’t mind the fact that it’s dubbed. Honestly I don’t get people who love to watch shows in languages they don’t speak, subtitled. Subtitles force you to flick your eyes away from the action, then back to the action, then back again constantly. Nope.

Also checking out #MonkeyKing, because I loved the old live action show “Monkey” back in the 80’s. Meh. Probably won’t continue that one past a couple episodes - we’ll see.

Completed S2 of #Outlander. Loving it so far, looking forward to moar.

That’s my Saturday streaming show roundup. Why am I using Masto like a diary? Who knows.

I have just read #MonkeyKing Journey toThe West (attr. #WuCheng'en, about 1580) in Julia Lovell's #translation for Penguin Classics, as I kept reading what #Chinese writers (Sanmao, Xiaolu Guo) say about it. It's an abridged version, only one poem. Successful in its own terms as an updated, whizz-bang tale -- rather like a big studio animation with jokes thrown in for the adults. I am slightly left with the feeling that I wish I had read Timothy Wu's more scholarly translation, or Waley's. 1/2

Todays #Chinese #GhostStory, from the famous collection I've been cribbing from, illustrates a common theme of #tricksters in Chinese #folklore. Of course the ultimate trickster is the ever-popular #MonkeyKing: Sun Wukong. But he is by no means the only trickster in Chinese stories.
