I've been running around #Monmouthshire these past few days. I recommend it.
@Archie8 This is the rental cost, not the materials cost. According to the article, they don't even own them.

Elaborate mid 13th century piscina at St Nicholas' church, Trellech, with a podium for a statue. The piscina is in the south aisle, so would have been for a side altar, and presumably the statue would have been of the saint that the altar was dedicated to.

I love water voles, they're such cute little critters, but they do all kinds of damage to the banks of the drainage reens on the Gwent Levels. The burrowing to create nests and passageways often causes the reen bank to collapse; no wonder the navvies of years gone by persecuted them for ruining their canal banks.

Looks like the local duck population will have to practice their ice skating around here today...
The Gwent Levels drainage reens have had a good covering of ice for three days now.

What a change in the weather, looking at this you could almost believe it was a summer afternoon! Hell of a lot better than all the wind and rain for sure.

It's a horribly wet day here in south Monmouthshire so I thought I'd share a memory of a walk when the weather was brighter, drier and a bit colder...
So Tilly and I were walking along a farm track when we came upon one of the curses of living in a country area. Amazing the lengths some people will go to to ditch their rubbish... and how stupid they can be!

Trellech, Monmouthshire. The name of the town means “three stones”. The town used to be much bigger in medieval times.

On a very dark, wet and blustery day (photo taken at 11am!) this is Tump Terret in Trellech, a motte of the castle of the de Clare family, first mentioned in 1231. A moat still partially circles the motte. Legend says it is the burial place of King Harold's men who were killed here in battle (and also the three chieftains commemorated by the three Harold's Stones nearby).

Grey Hill Bronze Age ritual site faces down onto the Severn Estuary from up high. A local tale in Llanvair Discoed village tells of John Gaunt the giant who had a throwing match with the devil. The giant threw one stone into a field (behind the ruinous castle and church), the Devil threw his into the Severn, creating Denny’s Island.
