The Three Graces in their classic pose. This mosaic is from the garden of the House of Apollo at Pompeii. Today this scene is held by the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli.
The touches of blue background give a sense of the original richness of the piece.

☀️ For #MosaicMonday: Mosaic of fish displayed in the Museum of Alba la Romaine, France. It comes from the triclinium of a so-called "Pinard" domus of the Alba la Romaine archaeological site - a rich roman villa, where seven other mosaics were found. 📸 Own photos.

This panel from a larger mosaic depicts the goddess Diana with two of her nymphs. They appear to have just been surprised by the arrival of the young hunter Actaeon. Things are not about to end well for the mortal!

This C2nd CE Roman mosaic suggests the preparation for a feast. On the menu: an array of meats, what looks to be dates (or something else, I’m not sure?), and a good dose of leafy greens!

#MosaicMonday Deze bijzondere vloer is na opgravingen in 1876 in Bordeaux tevoorschijn gekomen.

The House of Tragic Poet, Pompeii
Well known mosaic depicting a growling dog and the warning “cave canem” (beware of the dog). It is found near the entrance of an imperial style house opposite the Forum baths. Interesting light caused by gaps in the ruins 📷 AH
Mosaic Monday: Ocean's Mosaic from Ossonoba (Faro, Portugal)
Chariot mosaic with parrot ~ late C2nd–early C3rd CE
This gorgeous piece was found in
1876 during the construction of Via Nazionale in Rome. It seems to depict a larger-than-life parrot driving a chariot!

Having our minds blown by #Ostia this week, so here's a few of the boat themed mosaics for #MosaicMonday
#mosaicmonday
More of the incredibly preserved mosaics from Ostia Antica. This one from the Thermal Baths of Buticoso depicts Epictetus Buticosus, likely an attendant of the baths. His well endowed depiction may be linked to guarding visitors against the heat of the baths

#MosaicMonday Yes you've seen the photo of this lion circulating on the internet, but not like this.😂
In Ephesus Terrace Houses.
This Severan era portrait is believed to be of an athlete given the emphasis on muscle delineation. Having said that, he doesn’t look like the happiest camper going around!

#MosaicMonday: The lovely helical mosaic floor of the winter guestroom of the Roman villa of #Antandros is almost unrecognizable to the ordinary visitor. You cannot see it from the top and it's covered with a thick layer of dust.
In ancient literature Antandros was mentioned as the city where #Aeneas began his journey to Rome.
