Stormy weather meant no mothing last night, so here's a featured for that visited the garden July 2022. This is a CHINESE CHARACTER, a rather common, UK-resident moth. It's USP is to mimic a bird-dropping to protect itself from predators, although I think it resembles a tiny porcelain dainty.

Happy !

Today we're putting the spotlight on one of our species to spot this month - the magnificent Twenty-plume Moth (Alucita hexadactyla)

The English name of the Twenty-plume Moth is slightly misleading, as each wing is separated into 6 'plumes'. The scientific name is more accurate, meaning 'six-fingered'. 🖐️

The caterpillars feed on the leaves and buds of honeysuckle. 🐛

It's another and today we're putting our spotlight on the Chestnut (Conistra vaccinii) 🌰

Please don't roast this chestnut on an open fire.

One of our more common winter moths, especially during mild spells. The name of this species is actually a reference to the Sweet Chestnut leaves that its caterpillar will feed on in spring! 🐛

Happy ! Today we're putting our spotlight on one of our species to see this month - the Mottled Umber (Erannis defoliaria) 😍

The males of this species can be seen with some strongly-banded patterning, while others are plain brownish with darker speckling. The females are completely wingless!

This autumn was excellent for many migratory species including the awesome Utetheisa pulchella (Crimson-speckled Flunkey). Around Montpellier, we had only 8 records in up to 2021, but 36 were recorded in 2022 !

Is a thing here? This is a mousy plume moth (Lioptilodes albistriolatus), a tiny species often found in this erect posture. It can do the typical "T" posture, too, like most . Wingspan is approximately 1 cm.

For a couple of bright yellow visitors to brighten up the timeline. The first is a Brimstone which was on my front door (also yellow) in early October.

The Canary-shouldered Thorn was from the end of September and is one of all time favourite moths... just so fluffy.

You can see how both might vanish into autumn leaves.

It's and today we're putting our spotlight on one of our species to see in November, the Common Plume (Emmelina monodactyla)!

This unusual moth rests with wings tightly rolled, resembling a small cross.

They're commonly found in England and often seen on fence posts, walls and even indoors, but you might also be able to spot them on Ivy blossom or ripe blackberries 🍃

With very limited recorded sightings in the last 100 years, the rare Crimson Speckled has made some thrilling appearances this autumn!

Reports from across the South of England have been springing up as an unexpected, yet well-received, influx of sightings.📍
