A little treat from #NationalTrust #Mottisfont for #FindsFriday. Workers undertaking renovations in 1990 removed a skirting board & found this handwritten message on the reverse: HM King George V Buried 1.30pm this day 28 Jan 1936 E. Sellers, H.Holy, A. Pragnell, Foster & Dicksee Rugby & London. With a flag drawing & a George IV coin. What delights or comments have you found left by past workers in your house? #Graffiti #DIY #Archaeology #Heritage

Talking of lost buildings its still possible to trace the lost monastic & Tudor phases at #NationalTrust #Mottisfont when conditions are right. This summer the drought revealed the lost buried walls as parchmarks where grass had less water so browned more quickly than its neighbours. We've seen them before, but always great to have them visible for visitors and use them as a way to talk about changing use and look of Mottisfont. #archaeology #drone #heritage #Hampshire

My job isn't just about #archaeology in the landscape it's about trying to understand the construction of our houses & lives of people who lived within them or built & maintained them. So removal of panels at #NationalTrust #Mottisfont provided a chance to record the bare bones of the house. This area is of interest as Mottisfont has shrunk from a #Medieval Priory to a #Tudor mansion to the house you see today which is built around the old medieval church nave, but how was it done? #Archaeology
