Dear Movie Makers,
Please stop using the Wilhelm scream, especially if your movie isn't a comedy/farce. It's stupid.
If you insist on using it, at least use it correctly. It very rarely, if ever, works for someone being shot.

The hype around #Oppenheimer is really something to behold. I've liked most of Nolan's work, but while it's certainly not bad, I don't get the endless user/critic 10/10 reviews this time round. Maybe I'll change my mind on rewatch, but I currently have no interest in rewatching it. Contrast that with the fact that I recently bought the Dunkirk bluray. Oh, well. Opinions may differ, I guess.

I went along to Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, having skipped Crystal Skull, and enjoyed it. The action scenes are a bit long, but that's just every action movie these days. Some things are clunky, but overall, an enjoyable romp. It's always good to punch a nazi.

Took a notion and made a trip to the #IFI to see The Eight Mountains (Le Otto Montagne). An Italian movie about a boy from the city who befriends a mountain boy during the summer, and how their lives take different paths through adulthood.
I thought it was very good, with some universal themes around the reality of life.

While watching John Wick 4, it occurred to me that probably more than half the guys that watch this movie would fantasise about being one of the bad guys.
Of course, it is not too much of a stretch to say that John Wick is a bad guy. He was a hired assassin, after all.

I finally went along to see #JohnWick4. It's okay. As I suspected beforehand, for an action movie that's almost 3hrs long, a couple of the action scenes overstay their welcome. By a lot. By the end, it almost descends into a farce and verges on self-awareness.
The scene through the rundown house is pretty great, but, again, it's a bit long.
If you already love the JW movies, then you'll probably enjoy this, too. If you're not that bothered, you can give it a miss.

Went to see 'Marcel the Shell with Shoes On'. It's a pretty cute little movie, combining live action with stop-motion. Themes include loneliness, loss, the vapid nature on most online interaction, and the importance on community. Oscar-nominated for Best Animated Feature.

Watched 'The Glass Onion'. While it's somewhat diverting, I'm glad I didn't make the effort to see it in the cinema. I don't think it's as smart as it thinks it is. A lot of the attempts at humour don't land. I think I'll be skipping the third instalment entirely.

This evening's bad movie offering, for the season that's in it, was 'Silent Night, Deadly Night Part 2". A strange collage of the first instalment with additional footage shot from the perspective of Billy's little brother, Ricky Reasonable fun, with the lead performance being quite something.

Went along to 'Violent Night' the other day. Fairly good fun in an 'R-rated Home Alone meets Die Hard in a Mansion' kind of way. Some fun deaths, including one near the end in particular. I think David Harbour (of Stranger Rhings fane) did a great job as a disenchanted Santa Claus with a dark past.

Surely the coming-of-age horror movie is rare genre, but that's how 'Bones & All' plays out. An intimate movie, following Maren as she discovers more about who she is and finds her kind. Taylor Russell plays a compelling lead, while Timothée Chalamet is the best I've seen him. Excellent movie.

#TheMenu is a tense and enjoyable movie. Somewhat farcical. Very well-cast, with Anya Taylor-Joy impeccable, as always. Ralph Fiennes the right balance of sinister and warm. Hoult's naive enthusiasm also well-pitched. If the trailer interested you, you won't be disappointed. #MoviesWithJohn

#Watcher is an effective, slow-build thriller, with immersive sound design. Though the story is not terribly original, it tells it well. Julia's slow descent is well-paced as it heads for an uncertain conclusion.

Went to see #Barbarian yesterday and still not entirely sure what to make of it. Some well-worn horror tropes, but arranged a bit differently. Creepy bits giving way to the bizarre. Can't really recommend going to see it, but wouldn't dissuade anyone either.

Just to flesh things out a bit here. If you haven't gone to see Banshees of Inisherin, you really should. I wasn't entirely convinced by the trailer, but the movie was superb. #BansheesOfInisherin #MoviesWithJohn
