For , I spotlighted for my students , one of the greatest mathematicians of the 20th century! She had to deal with the sexism of university policies and, later, Nazism in her home country, eventually fleeing to the US. She began teaching in 1933 at Bryn Mawr college and died two years later at the age of 53. Greatly praised by Albert Einstein, she has in recent years been honored with a Time Magazine cover, a Google Doodle, and a play about her life.

To wrap up with my students, I showed this wonderful five-minute video from a few years ago that was directed by multimedia executive and writer Cate Scott Campbell. It brings us face to face with a number of diverse women of various ages who talk about their love for - even though they actually struggled with it at one time and even used to think they were "bad at math." I told my students that if the girls take just one thing from their time with me, I hope it will be a deeper belief in themselves that they can do math and anything else as well as guys can. (Research has disproven the bullcrap myth that boys are better than girls at math.) I also shared that I want the boys to take from me a motivation to call out sexist behavior and attitudes among other dudes, doing what they can to make space for girls and women to be seen, heard, and promoted for their contributions. youtu.be/Q5XRnCWY45k

Showed this video about , whose story is best known from the film , to my classes yesterday for ! It's just the first of several moments I'll bring to my students during the next few weeks that highlight pioneering African American mathematicians, both past and present!

Returning to school next week, teaching my algebra kids about absolute value functions. I thought Jeanette "The Black Widow" Lee could give me an assist!

Another one of my favorite things in 2022 from the :

Teaching my Algebra 1 students a way to remember which absolute value inequalities are "and" questions (i.e., intersection) and which ones are "or" questions (i.e., union) - the directions of 's ears! (After I came up with the Mandalorian version, the new series Andor came out - perfect for what I was trying to teach.)

Another of my fave things in 2022:

Bringing stories of math pioneers and discoveries to my students! This esp. applies to female mathematicians and mathematicians of color. Growing up, I only saw bios in math textbooks about European men, so I assumed only white dudes had ever done anything worth discussing. But in many cases, the same discoveries outside of Europe came several hundred years earlier! Representation matters, including in .

Another one of my favorite things from the in 2022:

Several of my pre-calculus students said this way of framing polar curves helped them to remember them. Images based on the very popular springtime Business Proposal, itself based on a popular webtoon. (Unfortunately, this lesson also ended up spoiling the ending for a couple of students.)

A mnemonic device for trigonometric angle addition formulae! Two of my pre-calculus students last year at Portola High School in the
Irvine Unified School District came up with it, including a Korean transliteration

November 23, or 11.23, is often called Fibonacci Day because it has the first four terms of the Fibonacci Sequence: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34 .... How about ? No disrespect to Fibonacci, but the Indian mathematician and poet wrote about the numbers some 1300 years earlier. He also wrote about Pascal's Triangle (1800 years pre-Pascal) and was the first to use binary numbers! (Pingala image from one of my fave websites, @mathigon.)
