Social media is like the ancient digital pet Tamagotchi. You have to feed and tend to it constantly and yet rarely get anything out of it.

In the coming days, I will spring-clean my account, delete old posts and replies, after which I will take some time to think about my future strategy.

This is by no means to say that any of you Mastodonians are causing my frustration. It is a structural dilemma. And it is platform independent:

Well over 700 people follow me on Mastodon, close to 80 on Instagram — and yet, on *both* platforms hardly *any* of my posts gets more than five to ten reactions of *any* kind, and rarely any comments at all.

One of the main reasons, as far as I can tell, is that social media applications are designed with the intent to distract people with ever more, more, more input so as to keep them glued to the screen.

Although this is not the idea behind Mastodon in particular and the fediverse in general, most people are used to this behaviour, hence replicate it here, too.

Also, it seems to me that people talk more and listen less these days.

Trying to gather a following to support my music seems impossible at this point.

It seems there are two kinds of beings: Hunters, and prey. Since I can say with absolute certainty that I am not a hunter, I have to keep a safe distance to those, because, as Ocean Vuong (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ocean_Vuong) puts it so aptly in his novel ‘On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous’, “freedom, I am told, is nothing but the distance between the hunter and its prey.”

Car salesmen are without any doubt hunters.

Bear with me, please …

I made this post a while ago, about me feeling disheartened by social media ignorance toward what I am doing (https://sunny.garden/@babumenos/109733943844371544). While several of the many replies where encouraging, trying to reassure me that it was not (the quality of) my music that was hindering my success, one thing became utterly apparent to me.

Basically, what I realised going through the replies was that, in order to promote your art on social media, you have to become a car salesperson.

Those who are best at selling their art, or rather, themselves really, they are the ones to find attention in sufficient ways. That means that I will not. I will most likely be stuck at five favourites and three boosts for the rest of my life, because I am not — and will not become — a car salesman.

It also means that not the quality of the work is the crucial factor for success — rather the capability of the person behind the work of selling themselves. This is neither what I want for myself, nor my art, or art in general.

@lashman I have the tail-end of a migraine so I'm sat here in my shades at work today. Also, the cat box on my desk is empty, which is unusual for this time of day. (He's taking advantage of a rare day without rain I think.)

On the plus side, I did a second round of SubmitHub promo at the weekend and got a few new placements, so launch day is looking good! (I wish I new more about doing #MusicPromotion though)

I'm taking 2 mental health days off work because I'm overwhelmed and heading for burnout. Here is a list of things I want to do:
- Spend some time in a coffee shop
- Catch up on #MusicPromotion (e.g. #SubmitHub, video making) for upcoming release
- Go outside
- Get a haircut
- Get a massage
- Make some music
- Write some code
- Attend an AGM (mandatory)
- Get more sleep
- Snuggle the cats

I feel I have overcommitted and this kind of behaviour is part of the problem.
