Mutulu Franklin est décédé dans sa cellule, à 72 ans, dans la nuit du jeudi 6 au vendredi 7.

Combattant de la Black Liberation Army, beau-père de Tupac Shakur, il a passé 36 ans derrière les barreaux après avoir été condamné à 60 de prison.

La liberté conditionnelle lui a été refusée à neuf reprises et on lui a diagnostiqué un cancer de la moelle osseuse en phase terminale, les médecins lui donnant six mois à vivre.

Il avait été accusé et reconnu coupable pour son implication dans une opération de financement de la Black Liberation Army qui avait coûté la vie à deux policiers de New York et d’un garde armé.
Mutulu Shakur avait aussi été reconnu coupable d’avoir participé à l’organisation de l’évasion d’Assata Shakur, une dirigeante de la BLA, d’une prison du New Jersey en 1979. Assata Shakur réside aujourd’hui à Cuba.
